It's our first holiday with DD, we are staying in house belonging to StepMIL so accommodation no problem. But any tips on fun things to do? Given that our previous holidays have mostly revolved around bars and fancy restaurants, we are a bit clueless. I am developing a strong suspicion that being on holiday with a baby is going to be just like being at home, only less convenient. We'll have a car so suggestions for day trips out of the city would also be appreciated.

The good thing about babies this little is that you can still do the bars and fancy restaurants (up to a point!) And it sounds as if you have on tap baby-sitting....Or isn't the MIL staying in her house too?

No babysitting - just us in the house, PIL don't live there. I'm assuming we'll be able to take DD with us to most places but wondering if eating at home more often would be easier, at least in the evenings (we have a pretty lax routine but she is usually 'ready for bed' pretty early, although we don't take her up until quite late).

Where are you staying?

fleacircus · 07/05/2008 17:04

Not central, somewhere on the outskirts. In the general direction of the zoo, I think, but I might be imagining that. A bus ride to the city; I can't remember exactly although we've been there before.

So out Corstorphine way then?

fleacircus · 07/05/2008 17:07

I really don't know, have laughably poor sense of direction combined with laziness so leave getting us places to DP. But getting around wasn't much of a problem last time we were there, the bus to the city centre takes less than half an hour (didn't have pram last time, though, now I come to think of it - are Edinburgh buses as accessible as the ones in London?) and we've got the car for longer trips.

Edinburgh buses are brilliant, but the town is a nightmare at the moment because of all the roadworks going on for the bastarding trams. Still, buses are a lot better than bothering with a car. Edinburgh is so small that nowhere really takes more than half an hour on a bus.

If you are out near Corstorphine, that is next to the zoo and so thats a definite for a day out. Also there is the botanic gardens, down Stockbridge/Cannonmills way, which you can spend a whole day at in nice weather. And its free. Stockbridge itself is very nice to just walk round.

There is also Princes Street gardens, obviously, and walks round the Royal Mile and the Castle. And Portobello Beach, which if you are staying out at Corstorphine I'd bring the car as its the very east end of the city. Also just wandering down at the Shore in Leith is lovely in good weather, and there are loads of nice bars and restaurants.

The Meadows is the biggest park in the city centre, its huge, and is always busy when the sun is out.

Maybe take a wee trip down to North Berwick one day, its really lovely and there is loads to do. Or the safari park, but I'd say yor DD is a bit too young to care!

Have a nice time
