Holiday near Plymouth

We have family who have moved to Plymouth and plan to go visit them in Spring/early summer. We live in Northumberland and it's a long drive so planning to fly to Bristol and drive from there as we also have family in Bristol we can stay with.

However as it's such a long way to go we'd like to make a proper holiday of it and book a place of our own for a few days too (or even up to a week budget permitting). But I haven't been to that part of the world since I was small. Any suggestions for a good place or area to stay? We don't want to make the drive back to Bristol airport too long so we would t want to go too much further . We will have our three year old with us.

Just to add we will have a hire car so we will be able to drive around a bit to visit different beaches etc, so somewhere with a few places within driving distance would be great!

Hi OP, we have stayed at both these places with our 4yo. Great locations both.

Near the first place, Salcombe is beautiful and has a lovely little beach accessible by the tiny ferry in about 2 minutes. A lovely day out. Plymouth itself is a bit rough in places but the aquarium is good.

The second place is further north nearer Bristol so could work for your journey. Near to Longleat, plus Bath etc, all lovely.

Both are v child friendly with indoor pools abs play areas.

So many lovely places to chose from. Bigbury had a lovely beach. There are a couple of holiday parks (Challaborough), lots of campsites and I would imagine some air Bnb's and holiday cottages. You can explore the South Hams. Hope Cove, Salcombe, Slapton, Kingsbridge, Totnes etc. Or you could do Torbay, more built up with more child friendly attractions.

The first place looks brilliant! Will definitely check this out. I think we'd rather stay in Devon rather than too close to Bristol as we've been to Bristol lots whereas haven't been to Devon in years. Would definitely like to visit some beaches! We have plenty of beaches on our doorstep but it's a bit colder up here!

Thank you so much I will look at all of these places - making a list!
