Bristol

Off for a few days in Bristol/Bath soon. We've been to both several times, so know them reasonably well, but I'm looking for new ideas.

I've booked the lovely Adelina Yard in Bristol for a special birthday meal (been before and it was so, so good).

I want to go to Arnos Vale Cemetery for a walk - is it easy to get to from the centre of town?

Any suggestions for things to do? We've done the obvious ones like Clifton/the suspension bridge. Is the thermae spa in Bath worth it?

Any nice places to eat in Bristol for the other night that are good for vegetarians and not £££ (as we'll be spending a lot in Adelina Yard)? Or maybe a nice lunch in Bath? We've eaten in Root in Whapping Wharf a few times and always found it very good, but I'd quite like to try somewhere new.

Any nice pubs in Bristol? We usually end up at the Left Handed Giant brewery.

Thanks for any ideas.

Sonny stores or little hollows in Bristol for lunch! Trying Noyas kitchen in Bath soon which looks good.

Thanks for these. I’ll have a look at the menus.

We haven’t done SS GB yet. We were going to last time we went, but the crowds put us off.

Any more ideas very much appreciated.

Clifton, in particular Royal York Crescent

M Shed - you can see the tickets I donated
There are various rides - train and boat associated with it in the summer

There's a fab Mystery Guide and lots of Treasure Trails for Bristol and Bath if you want to explore on foot.

It's very easy to get to. It's on the Bath Road so there are lots of buses that run from Bristol to Bath/Keynsham etc. (eg X39, 522) that stop just by it. Also the 1 bus to Broomhill goes that way. You could also walk to Arnos Vale from the centre in about 30 mins if you like walking.

If you want to make it a longer walk there is a lovely little woodland walk called Nightingale Valley about 20 mins walk from Arnos Vale. It's just a lovely little quiet woodland walk with a nice stream.

We The Curious science museum is excellent especially if you have any kids with you.

If you travel in April or after that there's a nice little pub called Beeses on a scenic riverside spot that you can get a boat to, but it's shut over the winter at the moment.

There's Grounded not too far from Arnos Vale too on Sandy Park Road if you want a pub which is not ridiculously pricey with some decent veggie options for lunch (8.50/9 for a panini or wrap, but more like £15 if you want a burger or similar). It's not mind blowing but reliably good pub food in my experience.

There's also a Deli and there's a coffee shop called Kin on that road that both do sandwiches too. I've enjoyed the Deli's sandwiches but their only seating is outside I think so that might be weather-dependent. I haven't tried Kin but have heard good things.

Sandy Park Road is halfway between Arnos Vale and Nightingale Valley if you do decide to tie the two together for a long walk.

If you are going to Arnos Vale and are interested in photography, very near the cemetery there is the Paintworks complex, which houses both the Royal Photographic Society and the Martin Parr gallery, both of which have very good free exhibitions.

There is a little cafe in the cemetery itself, or you can eat at Bocabar in the Paintworks complex, which is very veggie-friendly.

If you are in Bath for the day, I would recommend lunch at Oak, which is a Michelin-listed veggie/vegan small plates restaurant near the Roman Baths and the Abbey.

The Bath spa has a rooftop pool, which is quite fun, plus various steam rooms, saunas, treatment rooms and so on. It is quite pricy, but there are often discount codes and deals if you look around. There used to be a special offer if you arrived by train, even just the short hop from Bristol.

Other good veggie-friendly restaurants in Bristol are Koocha (vegan mezze on Stokes Croft/Cheltenham Road) and the Garden of Easton (near Stapleton Road station).

I forgot Bocabar but that's also very good. Lots of pizzas and calzones and a few other things.

The SS Great Britain was surprisingly good, and I'm not a huge history buff. It's done really well.

At Bristol is pretty cool if you have primary aged kids.

This has been renamed to We The Curious now btw.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/01/2025 06:33

This is really useful. Thanks so much, everyone.

Winter, so no boat trips annoyingly.

No kids. No car.

Oak is on my radar in Bath.

Has anyone been to the Thermae Spa?

Paintworks definitely on the list with the cemetery.

Sorry @SoloSofa24 - I missed that you’d described the spa so well.

Thanks for this. We’ll only have a couple of hours before we need to get back into town to catch the train, but I’ll save this info for another visit.
