Less obvious places to visit by train

Afternoon,

Due to various circumstances, I'm completely in charge of the holidays for my children this year (3 of them, aged 8-13). DH has various work related commitments coming up, so we've decided that I will book what I feel like for us, and if he's able to join us, he will. Slight catch - we won't have the car. I'm happy to travel by train, and we've done a number of city and coast day trips and short breaks by train, and have one city break planned already for this year, to Liverpool. I'd like to keep it to the UK ideally. We may have a Eurostar trip at some point, but the last couple of years we've had holidays abroad, and I like the idea of staying at home.

I'm finding it easy to come up with ideas for cities and various coastal resorts, but I'm wondering if there are less obvious places that are reachable by train that we should consider, either for a day trip or a short break. Any recommendations? For reference, we've been to Birmingham, York, Southend, Brighton, Great Yarmouth, Hastings, St Albans, Canterbury, Rochester, Whitstable, Margate and Stratford-upon-Avon among others in recent years. I'm maybe looking for smaller, quieter seaside resorts, or smaller cities and towns which maybe have some interesting museums, or walks, or parks, or are particularly pretty and easy to amuse ourselves. Happy to do hotels, caravan parks, apartments or house. Probably not camping (don't fancy lugging the gear) but maybe one of those glamping type places could work. We can get to any central London mainline station pretty easily, so hopefully we should be able to get to most places without too many problems. Don't mind a long-ish journey if there's somewhere good we can stay for a few days.

All recommendations welcome! If we don't use them this year, can always keep them in mind for the future.

Chester. Carlisle. Weston super-mare. Bath.

cestlavielife · 20/01/2025 16:16

Conwy by train or Llandudno
Then take local train Llandudno to Betws y Coed and all way to Blaenau Ffestiniog
Local buses too up to Eryri (Snowdon)

You could do the RockWatch Geology trip in Dorset your DC are a good age for it. Train down there and they'll pick you up at the station. It is very reasonably priced, I'm sure DD and I were less than £200 for the week, based out of a field centre and each family gets there own dorm, food is pretty good 'school trip' food I didn't hear anyone complain when we went a few years back.

You could go on to stay on Swanage or travel on along the coast

Theweekjr · 20/01/2025 16:17

Where will you be coming from?!

midgetastic · 20/01/2025 16:18

Peak District - hope valley and go to Castleton and the caves

Glasgow and the fort William and then mallaig if the steam train still runs

BigDahliaFan · 20/01/2025 16:22

Isle of Man, book a sail and rail ticket - very cheap, get to ride on a ferry, you can get round the place on steam trains, trams and buses. Lots of castles, beaches and things for kids. It's quite fun being somewhere a 'bit foreign' different money, place names in Manx, Manx flags everywhere.

We live zone 3 London, so can get to any London mainline stations without too much difficulty.

Thanks for all the ideas, some good possibilities. Chester I was thinking maybe for a day trip when we're in Liverpool. And I've not seen much of wales, so that could be good. Middle DC would love the geology idea.

Definitely several there to look into that I hadn't thought of.

Isle of Wight? Used to go by bike years ago. Train to Portsmouth, then ferry. Ryde beach is great for kids. You can also travel around the island on bus and on train/steam train, lots to do. www.visitisleofwight.co.uk/

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 20/01/2025 16:51

Lake District? Windermere on the train then do hikes/lakes/eat your body weight in Kendal Mint cake.

JohnofWessex · 20/01/2025 17:02

Tenby?

Plymouth

If you fancy a longer trip Porthmadog is nice and there is the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland railway

Dawlish, Dawlish Warren, Dartmouth - train to Paignton (The Land Taste forgot) then the steam train and ferry, cruises on the Dart, including a Paddle Steamer, or to Totnes

Snowmanscarf · 20/01/2025 17:06

Broadstairs for beach (gets very busy on hot summer days) - day trip

Needmorelego · 20/01/2025 17:08

Take the sleeper down to Penzance (from Paddington) or up to Scotland (from Euston).

Almahart · 20/01/2025 17:09

Could you fly to Belfast and see the Titanic museum and the coast?

Almahart · 20/01/2025 17:10

Also, if you were based in Seahouses in the Northumberland coast you could get busses around the area. It's beautiful

Whatwouldnanado · 20/01/2025 17:12

Chester’s great you can do more than one day - zoo, riverboat trip, Roman history and check out the theatre venue.

Needmorelego · 20/01/2025 17:13

Last summer I went to Kidderminster (Chiltern train from Marylebone to Birmingham Moor St and then change to a Kidderminster train).
I then went on the Severn Valley Steam Railway - and it was one of the nicest summer days out I have had in years.
Beautiful countryside.
Kidderminster also has West Midlands Safari Park.

BeyondMyWits · 20/01/2025 17:15

Cardiff and Swansea are great to visit by train.

Seeline · 20/01/2025 17:16

Norwich and Cambridge are close to each other by train. You've also got the Norfolk coast and the Broads.

This is definitely on my list for sometime, but it's one that DH wants to do, so I think we'll save it for when he's available.

Bath?

Ghostofborleyrectory · 20/01/2025 17:39

The slow train from Lancaster to Carlisle- utterly beautful, travelling through salt marshes, estuaries and by the sea. Grange-Over-Sands is a lovely little Victorian resort or you can go further to places like St Bees and Whitehaven, faded grandeur, quiet but full of history and great to explore and cheap to stay. Ravenglass is particularly pretty and has an excellent pub and Roman bathhouse and near Muncaster castle which is an allegedy haunted castle with stunning views. You can either carry on to Carlisle or just stay in one of the many lovely places on the route.

AHFBridport · 20/01/2025 17:39

I second the recommendation for Cardiff, you get off the train right into the city centre with the castle, shops, museums, boat trip from the park to the shiny new riverfront area. Lots to do, reasonable prices all round.

Also Portsmouth/Southsea and get the hovercraft over to Ryde, IOW, if you get bored of the many attractions including beach, amusements, pier, park, loads of stuff to do at the dockyard/Mary Rose/Spinnaker Tower etc. August Bank Holiday weekend they have an excellent family-friendly festival called Victory on Southsea Common - not a camping one, day tickets only I think. Great value, we had a fab time there.

Travel to Leeds, change for skipton, and then hire a narrowboat on the leeds-liverpool canal.

Also within easy reach of Skipton by train: Haworth, Saltaire, Grassington. And Dales buses out into the countryside.
