Jorvik Center York

Is it worth for 2 adults? DH and I are on a weekend trip in March and while we have been to York before with DD, we didn‘t go to the Jorvik Center.

We are quite into history, know a decent amount of Viking history and the reviews are very mixed.

It's 30 mins of animatronics and light history on a tiny train. I wouldn't overthink it.

I went with school when I was about 8 and loved it.

I thought it was naff and quite brief. I wouldn't bother.

For adults and no children personally I'd probably say no.
It's quite small, quite expensive for what it is and a part of it is riding in a little train around looking at models of Viking's.
For kids I'd say yes it's good but for 3 adults probably would give it a miss.

Took the kids years ago. The smell still haunts me! I absolutely would not bother for just adults. It really is about 30 minutes and is not particularly great. Real tourist trap!

Its more aimed at kids to be honest.
I don't think you would hate it but you might spend a lot of time wondering when its going to actually start and the realise it just finished.
Also, don't do it with a hangover (bitter experience)

It stinks but it's interesting, not a lot of in depth history as such but it's worth the 30 mins I think, particularly as the models in there are based on actual people. We took the kids with us as they there there but I'd go just 2 adults.

My husband is a history teacher. We went on a trip to York a few years ago and both of us really enjoyed it.

Yes, it’s “worth” it. The people that run it are great. They get actual Vikings to work there, amazing people!
Either they’ve turned the smell down since I first went in the 80s or covid and age have done for my sense of smell. I couldn’t smell anything at all recently.

I can still remember the smell and we went in 1987/1988!!!!

What does it smell of? We have it on our list but DD has the most sensitive gag reflex in the universe, so if it makes her retch the whole visit could go tits up.

It has "smellivision" so it smells of whatever you are passing - the toilet is gross

You can get entry with Tesco clubcard vouchers if you have any. I did that and it was ok, but would have felt aggrieved if I'd have payed in full.

I preferred the castle museum.

We decided not to go after reading reviews and went to the main museum which was good. I knew my daughter would have wanted to have got off half way through and I guessed that wasnt possible.

That cut to the chase,we were there a few years ago and my words on exiting That was shit!!
Vastly overrated.
Castle museum was ace.

Now, the Castle Museum is the dog's bollocks! Really good.

I don't understand why Jorvik gets all the press, when the Castle Museum is so much better.

But actually, that means Jorvik has queues and all the tourists, and the Castle Museum is quiet.

I've had a rethink, OP- Jorvik's great. All tourists keep going there, and leave the good museums for those of us in the know. 😉

I loved it! Went last year. My son liked it so much we did the ride twice 🙈
