Learn to surf holiday Cornwall

I'm interested in taking my two kids (8 and 10, both strong swimmers) to cornwall to learn to surf.
Can anyone recommend a good beach to do so that would be ideal for beginners but enough surf to catch a wave.

Would Fistral beach be horrendously busy in August?

I recommend Bude. It's a lot sleepier and quieter than Fistral, but a lot more reasonable. There's a couple of decent surf schools there, and the guys the Zuma Jay shop are good for information and rental etc

Bude is great its like stepping back in time but in a good way.
Bear in mine they will be exhausted after a couple of hours and it can be hard work, some of the better waves are had when its pouring with rain so best to have some back up activities.
This place runs gas making and bone carving its great.

I like Watergate Bay outside Newquay. Bude is also nice (and quieter)

Sennen Cove is beautiful & a great place to learn how to surf.

PauliesWalnuts · 15/01/2025 11:06

Ex boyfriend is a v keen surfer and taught both his kids to surf but he favours Croyde in Devon.

1dayatatime · 15/01/2025 11:21

I would also recommend Bude and Zuma Jay and also Croyde.

Sennen is excellent for more experienced surfers but it tends to get better surf so if there is enough to surf at say Bude or Fistral then it will be too big for beginners at Sennen. But if there is no surf at say Fistral then there's a good chance of surf at Sennen.

St Ives is actually a really good beginners beach but it will be ridiculously rammed (and expensive) in August. Polzeath is also OK but will be busy.

Avoid Watergate Bay as it has a nasty rip and definitely to be avoided for children.

I was coming on to say Sennen and smart surf school but see several people has already beat me to it! My children learned to surf there and it is a really friendly professional set up and stunning location.

Wow! That's an amazing response- thank you so much. Lots to sit and google tonight!

Perranporth. Look up Pegs surf coaching; run by pegleg who appeared on Survivor last year. He's brilliant.

If you do go to Newquay then look up Bluewings surf school. Not the biggest or the fanciest but the nicest blokes you could hope to meet. They operate down at Fistral but at the quieter end.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 15/01/2025 13:48

Crude. But they'll al be rammed in August.
