hi
so im still trying to get pregnant but im looking into baby travel so can get the right things when time comes to it.
i know that from hospital to home need a car seat. and for the first few months baby's need to be in a laying position when traveling.
also know that baby not meant to be in car seat longer than 2hours at a time.

what is confusing is what do i use in different travel situations:
if im walking to the shop then id use a bassinet or a baby sling?
short trips in a car (doctors, restaurant, other) id use a car seat?
what about town trips (via taxi)? id be in a taxi for only 10-15 minutes but walking around town itself for 3-4 hours.
what visit family? (train/couch and taxi/bus) who are few hours away and id prop be there for a couple nights.

i live on my own and while i have a small support system i will be a single parent and cant drive. im not likely to visit family much but would want to take baby to my mum who cant travel and id have to take a couch n taxi to get to her (about 4hour trip so would have to stay for a few nights).

i wont be able to afford a lot of equipment nor have the space (1 bed flat) so don't want to buy things that wont get used.

doesn't seem feasible to take a car seat and a bassinet to town, can baby travel in taxi for short trip to town in bassinet ??

advice would be appreciated. i do know most things and i know some stuff is conman sense but travel is confusing (only remember basics from school child care study)

I'm sorry, I have no idea what the current guidelines are or what the solution would be but hopefully someone will be along soon who can help Flowers

Do you think that this one might be better in a section like Parenting or maybe Pregnancy?

I'd look into a bassinet style car seat if you're going to use taxis a lot and are restricted on space.

Joie do one called the Calmi (I think), that you can pair with pram wheels. Then you can just carry your sling with you if you want to baby wear while out and about but I wouldn't like to baby wear in a taxi even though I think it's legal.

thank, im hoping to get the silver cross dune bundle that includes a newborn pod and car seat so for those first few months id only have to switch between the car seat and pod (pod attaches to the main seat so would only have remove both part as if was 1). ill have the sling in baby bag or on ready to put baby in when not in a car

On taxis LEGALLY they can sit on your lap. Never put the seat belt around both of you.

But its not really safe. Its best to use a car seat you add to the pushchair, then take regular breaks.

On a train they can either be on your lap or in a normal pushchair.
Coach... you need to check. Not all car seats fit.

TickingAlongNicely · 08/01/2025 12:00

Plus unfortunately you will find... the baby stage is the easiest. Toddler car seats aren't as transportable.

Caspianberg · 08/01/2025 12:03

Better with something like stokke yoyo. If you get newborn nest and not carrycot it all folds flat in one piece. You can use car seat in taxi, put car seat on pram base when out. You can take sling with you to give baby bread from car seat.

Also small babies need feeding and changing often. My son every 90mins average when small. So they aren’t going to be in the car seat for 3-4 hours. You have in car seat in taxi, on arrival have to stop in park bench or cafe to feed baby so they are out. Change them etc and they sit with you. Then the 1-2 hrs time starts again. Or you pop them in sling and push empty pram/ car seat on pram

Merrow · 08/01/2025 12:05

Does it have to be a taxi? Are there no public transport options? It's really the car seat that makes it tricky (and impossible at toddler stage). Facebook pages are great for getting baby stuff for free or cheap, so I'd look to get a travel cot to leave at your mum's (they fold up very small) as that will be one less thing to transport.

GothicBabiSnitchRay · 08/01/2025 15:27

i say taxi as im terrified out going outside as is let alone public transport. i think i can force myself through a train trip to my mum's once (unless can convince sum1 to take me lol). really couldn't go on an actual bus. ill worry about travel with toddler nearer that time

I say this kindly, but as you aren’t actually pregnant yet, are you sure a baby is a good idea?
If your not pregnant yet but afraid of leaving the house then how will you function with a child that needs taking outside daily for walks, parks, life, doctors, events?
If your planning of being a single parent from the start it’s going to be very difficult
The pram is literally the last thing to consider

GothicBabiSnitchRay · 08/01/2025 18:56

@Caspianberg i dont take offense, i know that having a kid involves going out and interacting with strangers and am very aware its gonna be hard but im luck to have a close friend and can re-learn to go out on own. its weird but when its an 'emergency' or if someone else need me do something that cant wait for them i cn push myself to make quick trips out. this past year i managed to go to doctors on my own 3 times and made a trip to cornor shop for a friend who could go due to injury.
iv also managed trips before with just me and a niece when she was a baby - yes was few years back. i hate going out on own and will panic easily but can and will learn to do so.
