Is there any ethical way to go on holiday to Cornwall WRT the housing crisis?

Husband wants to go to Cornwall this summer and stay in a holiday let. I'm aware there are huge problems for local people with all the houses there being bought up for holiday homes and a shortage of affordable housing. Is there any 'ethical' way to go and stay in Cornwall without being part of this problem?

There is a John fowler holiday resort in looe. Trelawne manor. It's really good for kids with lots of space, swimming pools and discos but they also have activities in the day which are really good. Bingo at night. There's a few around the country and I love the Devon and Cornwall ones. Devon in particular as if the weathers good, by the beach you wouldn't even know you're in England.

YHA Treyarnon is lovely, right beside the sea. I like a room but you can camp if you prefer or are budgeting. Like other youth hostels it has a massive self-catering kitchen, lounge, and drying room.

Why is a hotel not the default choice?

I don't know people are so obsessed with renting air b.n.bs - why go on holiday and then spend a good chunk of the time cooking, washing up etc- why not eat local food in local restaurants- and of course all the cleaning you have to do at the end to avoid a fine or non return of deposit. It's really weird.

We have young children, a holiday isn’t sat in a dark room at 7pm in near silence. The cleaning is extremely basic, someone would have to be a very dirty individual to get a fine, or a return of a deposit that doesn’t exist on airbnb.

I agree it's lovely. Nice to have a pool and activities like tennis, aqua zorbing, mini golf etc. In a very rural area but you can travel to Looe etc

Ive just looked this up, the prices are very good, but looking on googlestreetview, theres no pavement on the country lane its on, no street lighting, you would then walk to the A roads to Looe, which do have a pavement on one side at some points but not all the way along, no street lighting there, dangerous to walk along.

No shop or pub or cafes/tearooms or restaurants within easy walking.

No bike storage that I can see for the options that came up

Simply not suitable for our needs, probalby ok if you go everywhere in a car and dont have other equipment to store, also cant see the allow pets although we dont have a dog now.

Can you really not imagine why?

Genuinely, I much prefer a "home from home" when I go on holiday in the uk. I like having a kitchen to make a proper cuppa when I fancy one without having to use shit little pots of uht milk. I like having a variety of snacks I like in the fridge. I like not having to eat out every night and chilling out in my PJs. I don't cook full on meals, but we take a couple of frozen batch cooked tubs from home, or buy a pizza to pop in the oven.

Seriously, staying in a hotel room for a week in the uk would do my nut in. Quite happy to stay in an hotel abroad if we are full board or all inclusive though.

OP - if you're worried about the ethics of it, choose an air bnb on a farm where they've just converted their own outbuildings, there are plenty of those in Cornwall.

You can do that in a static caravan or lodge.

Err..yes...those are self catering aren't they? The question was why do people prefer self catering to hotels.

muddyford · 05/01/2025 16:26

Camp.

That’s some serious investigation! They do allow pets. Or did when we stayed there last which was 22/23. It was a chalet we stayed in.

there is car parking in looe which has lots of what you’re after. We got a taxi there when we needed to (example drinking) and it was fine. Not overly expensive. I think most of Cornwall is those little lanes but u wouldn’t feel comfortable walking in them. Cycling maybe if you’re into it.

there is a restaurant on site along with a pub and a shop. Would bikes not be stored in the chalet/caravan?

look at their other locations around the country. It’s a great company.

I spend a serious amount of time researching everywhere we stay, I always find the property on street view so that I know where we can go on foot or bike (not keen on cycling on roads)

Each property that came up didnt take pets but I didnt look at the whole list, only the first 5 or so that came up and its just something I noticed, I wasnt searching for that as such

The problem with chalets and bikes is that there are normally steps up to static caravans, the bikes are heavy, usually covered in mud from the day, they woujld take up room in the chalet/caravan.

Anyway, looks a good option for those that it suits well the prices are very very good, soemthing which needs countering every time people complain about the cost of UK holidays and that going abroad is cheaper, it really isnt.

Yes, you'd need a car as its in a very rural area. I've actually been going on holiday without a car for the last few years and have found Minehead, Somerset and Weymouth, Dorset great for that due to the £2 buses that go to lovely places, such as Dunster Castle and Village, across Exmoor to Lynmouth or from Weymouth to Corfe Castle and Village, Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove etc.

We do have a car, therwise we would never get there!

But Ive been booking places since the camping horror where we're either in a busy village or small town where we can stumble to pubs and restaurants

But Im always tempted by somewhere right on a beach, just looking at the same company at Cardigan Bay but annoyingly, one caravan I saw that could be an option, they've only got 2 pictures of it, I like to see every nook and cranny of a property I book, you also cant choose the specific location on the site, I think thats pretty poor, Im very fussy about where I want to be, hence my forensic research about where I stay!

Theres also no pictures on their site of their restaurant (that is not the sort of restaurant I would want to be honest but if its onsite then I want to know about it) or details of the menu, which again is pretty poor. I dont know why companies do this.

It's 7 mins taxi from Looe station and looks to be on a bus route. I personally could not go to a holiday park for hols, just not my scene. The thought of somewhere with kids activities does not appeal as it means you are stuck there doing stuff or while they do stuff that's keeping you from seeing Cornwall

ExceededUsefulEconomicLife · 05/01/2025 17:42

@soupfiend one in Devon is right on a beach. I think it's brixham and I think it's south bay. We stayed at another site that I can't remember the name of and they're at the opposite edge of the same beach. It's not a beach beach but a beautiful place to sit, paddle etc. here's some pics...

It's a trail for walking and cycling and then a secluded beach with a bit of sand and some rocks.

Bedruthen Steps hotel has a small block of serviced apartments next to the hotel - you can use all of the hotel facilities and eat in the restaurant if you want to. There's a good surf club in Mawgan Porth to wear your feral kids out too.

Ok. The OP showed an interest in holiday parks so people were suggesting them for her. There were sports and a pool available if you wanted them but we travelled around as well.

ExceededUsefulEconomicLife · 05/01/2025 18:45

@Printedword that's great for you. How do your kids feel about it? They may really enjoy it and you can do both.

IdaPolly · 05/01/2025 18:53

Trelawne Manor is a pretty low key holiday park. There should be plenty of time to use the pool as well as travel around. It's not like Center Parcs or Butlins

Pavlova31 · 05/01/2025 18:55

The St Ives Holiday Village is set just on the outskirts.Lodge, Cottage, Bungalow, Accessible, Chalet and Caravan accommodation and an indoor pool set in 100 acres of woodland. Apparently some of these are also for Sale.

Our DC never been interested in going to a holiday park type holiday. Not even Center Parcs

The locals have no problem with the tourists, it is the second home owners they don't like, but it is the Cornish selling to them in the first place.

Just go to a holiday let.

I think that is probably true in many cases. It's when the second homes are left empty for large parts of the year.

LaDeeDaDeeDa · 05/01/2025 19:09

Rather than a tent, why don't you rent a motorhome?
