Shrewsbury: where to stay

HolidayHattie · 01/01/2025 15:31

Need accommodation for a weekend in Shrewsbury and would love some recommendations. Requirements are:

  • In the historic centre or within easy walking distance of main sights
  • Car parking
  • Hotel or traditional &B preferred over AirBnB or apartment.
  • Old country inn or modern box both equally fine; location and parking more important than aesthetics.

Also, suggestions for things to see / places to go (a two day itinerary would be perfect.) I read the Cadfael books years ago so obviously the Abbey is a must.

Finally, does it rhyme with shoe or show? Arguing with DH over this.

Shoe! Actually, people born and bred there call it shoosbury. It's a long time since I lived there, so will leave recommendations for others. 😉

We stayed in the Lion & Pheasant a few years ago and it was lovely. There’s another hotel called the Lion, so make sure you book the right one!

Nope. North of the river Shrooos bury, south of the river shrowsbury

Definitely Shoe - posh people call it shrow but we don't appreciate them! 😁. I live here so don't stay in the hotel but Lion and Pheasant I agree is very pretty and well located at bottom of Wyle Cop, Lion hotel is on Wyle Cop and is nice too and both have parking. Prince Rupert hotel is supposed to be nice and historic but not sure about parking but there are loads of long stay car parks around that you could park at too.
I know you didn't ask but my favourite restaurants - Csons (for brunch/lunch) Dough and Oil for the best pizza, Bobby Tacos do incredible taco/burritos, for a fancier dinner - Walrus and Dolce Vita, both do delicious taster menus but honestly theres loads of lovely independent cafes and restaurants.

Shrewsbury itself is a lovely town to spend a day and just potter, lots of nice independent shops, have a wander around the Quarry (our nice park) eat some delicious food. I actually did the treasure trail hunt around Shrewsbury recently when friends were visiting and it was a really good way to explore and took you to the castle as part of it. If you fancied a walk one of the days Attingham park (National Trust) is just outside (about 10 min drive from town) and is very pretty and directly opposite is a lovely pub/restaurant called Mytton & Mermaid. If you fancied more adventurous walk head down to South Shropshire for some incredible walks.

Yep, you'll hear it either way from Shropshire locals, which is most confusing.

My upper middle class Shropshire relatives say Shrowsbury, the lower middle class ones say Shroosbury, which ties in with the suggestion in this news story.

Not sure where to stay, but Csons is nice for lunch/brunch. www.csons-shrewsbury.co.uk/food/

'Shroosbury' v 'Shrowsbury'

A huge row has broken out on the internet site Facebook with more than 4,000 people having their say - about how to pronounce the name of Shropshire's county town of Shrewsbury.

Premier Inn right in the centre. It’s a small town so anywhere in the centre is fine for The Abbey. The castle and The Dana which was Shrewsbury’s prison are also worth visiting.

Does the Premier Inn have parking?

Limited parking I think but there's a 24 hour car park in walking distance. Honestly unless you're on a budget I'd skip the Premier Inn, it's a little run down compared to other options.

Definitely shoe!
Premier inn has parking next to it the multistory, shared with charles Darwin shopping centre
Lion and pheasant also lovely, no parking but you can park at asda nearby and book extended parking on just park I believe, I've used it for day parking so assume can be used overnight as you put your times in you need

macshoto · 02/01/2025 10:12

Lion & Pheasant is a good - but relatively pricey option. I've not stayed for a few years but when we last did it have a small car park on site.

Almost opposite Tanner's the wine merchant - which is well worth wandering into to look at their traditional cellar shop.

HolidayHattie · 04/01/2025 23:37

Does anyone know anything about the prison? Apparently you can stay there.

Scrub that; looks like it's more an event than accommodation and there's no availability until April.

It is cheaper to park at Frankwell car park across the river than the multi storey (24hr) but if there is a flood the car park can be closed.
