Getting from Euston Station to St Pancras with pushchair and luggage

Donimo · 28/12/2024 09:16

My family are travelling on the eurostar for a holiday. This will include myself, dh, 6 year old and almost 3 year old twins. We will get the train from the midlands to London and the nearest station to St Pancras we can arrive at is Euston (correct me please of I am wrong here).

I am thinking of taking the double stroller mainly to keep the twins strapped in whilst traveling through London but will also be useful whilst on holiday. So we will most likely have 3 suitcase, a double pushchair (with toddlers strapped in) a couple of rucksacks and a 6 year old.

I am trying to decide on the best way to get from Euston to St Pancras. I believe to get to Euston underground involves escalators which won't be easy. So thinking of walking but how easy will this be through London streets on a Saturday morning with the luggage? Or taxi but would we all fit with the luggage? Any other suggestions?

Or you could get a train straight to St Pancras on the East Midlands Trains line if they go from anywhere near where you live

JingleAaaallTheWay · 28/12/2024 11:07

It’s an easy walk but you don’t have enough arms for the luggage (& you are also banking on there being space in luggage racks)

Pack lighter or look into a service to send your luggage on ahead

If the luggage is unwieldy take a cab - how do you plan to manage 3 cases and a buggy between 2 adults? It cannot be done without 1 person going back and forth on any steps etc

Anotherfrozenpizzafortea · 28/12/2024 11:11

We've traveled with 4 kids to Spain for 2 weeks and managed with only 2 cases, it's your luggage that's gonna be the biggest struggle - one adult will be using both hands to wrangle the buggy and dc, how's the other adult going to manage 3 cases?

Oh, and walk. Far less faff

MumonabikeE5 · 28/12/2024 11:16

The bus 205 from bus stop D at Euston Square is minutes away. And goes to King’s Cross.

there are other buses that do that quick journey too.

MumonabikeE5 · 28/12/2024 11:18

Yeah, and really reduce your luggage to 2 reasonable size pull alongs and better still 2 under seat backpacks and a pull along.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 28/12/2024 11:21

Three suitcases a double pram and two adults doesn't work.

goingdownfighting · 28/12/2024 11:22

Taxi.

Felimscat · 28/12/2024 11:24

Sorry not what you asked but I agree with PP you've got way too much luggage. You need to pack lighter as 3 suitcases, a double stroller and 3 kids is too much to carry and lug on and off trains. I would do you and DH large backpack each. 1 large case. 1 shoulder bag to go in the buggy. DC6 can carry their own backpack with some items in I presume.

I would also walk between Euston and St P.

TheOGCCL · 28/12/2024 11:28

The back route between Euston and St P is signposted on lamp posts with green banners. There are steps down from the station that way. Too much luggage will be an issue generally, not just here.

Hi all, thank you all for the advice. In reply to some questions

  1. We normally travel to London from Warwick Parkway but this line goes into Marylebone so much more difficult. So planning on going to Coventry so can go to Euston. Out of suggestions for East Midlands stations- Leicester would be the closest but an hours drive in the wrong direction.
  2. Luggage - 3 suitcases would be max and am planning to try for less. But it's difficult for a couple of reasons - firstly my twins have some health needs meaning they have chronic diarrhoea- they went through 3 outfit changes each due to this yesterday and where we are staying has no washing machine. Also need to take our folding car seats.
  3. How we have managed suitcase before is for my husband to take 2 cases and I can push the pushchair with 1 hand so can pull a suitcase with the other. My 6 year old is really sensible and will walk holding the pushchair.
  4. We are travelling to brussels then hiring a car from there. Will easily be able to fit the luggage in the hire car. Took 4 suitcases and pushchair to south Africa recently and it was fine. Our double stroller folds really small
  5. Stroller is needed for the twins they won't walk through busy places and would just want to be carried through stations/London.

I think we may try the advice of my dh taking the luggage and 6 year old in a black cab. I can help him load them into the cab. Then I will walk with pushchair and meet them the other end.

I think the op knows what station she’s going to though eh?

She literally said “correct me if I’m wrong”.

gingerlybread · 28/12/2024 11:31

Definitely walk the back way as suggested, much better pavement surface too.
That's far too much luggage OP as there are a lot of escalators to negotiate in Paris and cabs/ Ubers aren't straightforward. Ideally you want to walk everywhere or use the metro. A double buggy will be hellish on the Eurostar, they don't have spaces for wheelchairs that can be used for buggies so it will need to fold down completely. I would rethink luggage and take a maximum of 2 wheeled backpacks which can be carried or wheeled, and 2 tiny folding buggies. You'll need hands free to get children on and off the Eurostar!!!

gingerlybread · 28/12/2024 11:33

@Donimo if you're going to Brussels you'll struggle with the baffling escalators and a buggy

HotCrossBunplease · 28/12/2024 11:34

Just as well she’s going to Brussels and getting straight into a hire car then…

Bestfootforward11 · 28/12/2024 11:43

10 min walk much easier x
*editing after your later post- cab with luggage sounds a good idea with you walking with the buggy. Have a great trip

EmotionalSupportBiscuit · 28/12/2024 11:53

@Donimo I also go Warwick Parkway to Marylebone weekly. You’ll know that you can’t reserve a seat on Chiltern and there’s bugger all room for luggage on their trains. It’s a different train operator from Coventry to Euston and you can book seats.

However, Marylebone is still on the same long straight road down past Euston to KX/St Pancras. You wouldn’t walk it! I have and it would be 45 minutes at a good pace, never mind with a 6YO. I have got an Uber from outside Marylebone several times and that’s been really easy.

MumChp · 28/12/2024 11:55

Why not downsize luggage a bit?
Walk or cab. Underground is awful with a double stroller

I find Brussels-Midi much easier than Paris-Nord with luggage, but given the onward journey is with a hire car, that's way easier.

With all that luggage you need to ask for priority boarding - knowing that Eurostar are like airlines and although they have never checked me, the tickets do say 1 20kg suitcase per passenger. Not sure how young children are booked on Eurostar so there may be allowances for them. But you really are going to piss off the other passengers with all that baggage so if you can possibly check this in advance it would be better.

I travel to and from the Midlands frequently and the train goes to and from St Pancras. Euston is for trains to the north-west. Where are you coming from?

It’s Birmingham new street to Euston isn’t it?

OP, that sounds like a lot to cope with. I'm feeling stressed on your behalf!

How will you manage in accommodation without a washing machine with two children with chronic diarrhea? Do you plan on getting through 3 changes of clothes a day for both of them and then bring all the soiled clothes back in the suitcase? Surely a washing machine is non-negotiable for a holiday with two kids with diarrhea?

Yeah, but I think St P goes to East Midlands.

BumpyaDaisyevna · 28/12/2024 12:35

Just walk- super easy, 10 mins!

LostittoBostik · 28/12/2024 12:36

Walk. Will be much easier than any other way. It's 10 mins max even with the weight of baggage. 5 if you were walking unencumbered.

We are really used to travelling (flying, ferry, car) just not done the eurostar before. I hand-wash any soiled clothes. But they will still need to be put through the washing machine before wearing again generally. Also it's not just the clothes that means we need to take more luggage. But they have a specific diet (gluten and dairy free) so may have to take some backup food options. That's another issue that I will need to research how easy it is to buy this free from food in Belgium and then pack accordingly

Walking is the easiest, particularly with the luggage/buggy situation. By the time you get that all in and off the bus you could be there.
