Honestly I must be living in 1979 or thereabouts. My children young adults and I thought we'd get a long weekend away in Sussex for my husband as his Christmas present.
Looking at air b and b 3 bed places that look ok not amazing and for 3 nights in March looking like 1k!! Am I delusional or are these people just trying it on!
I went to Venice this year in a nice hotel for 3 nights with flights and breakfast for far less!

Ive been looking over the last year at ferries to go to those areas and the prices are through the roof, I dont know how anyone affords the ferry?

That may well be the case, the prices may have shot up in the years since our regular family holidays.

I dont cook and clean in an airbnb but I want the space of my own space, plus parking, plus bike storage, plus dont want to hear people walking up and down the corridor, plus be limited to what time I can eat breakfast, hate hotels

@AuntyEntropy what's the MN discount? I'm looking at booking somewhere for the summer in another area of the UK.

Here you go. Only 7% but if you were going to book anyway...

@AuntyEntropy thank you. It's £93 off so not to be sniffed at. The deposit is bigger and no pay in instalments options but still.

I hate Air bnb. Just people who happen to have a shed in their garden who live in a pretty part of the country who charge through their arse for guests staying there. You may as well look at a Premier Inn. At least cleaning and breakfast wont be vastly overcharged either.

I've booked a couple of nights in a pub now! Still came to almost 1k for two nights in March but at least I'll get breakfast!!

HOW MUCH?!

Jesus OP, what a rip off!

Although it can be a lot for sc accommodation, I still often prefer it as the travel is Easier (if you drive) and we don’t spend as much when there. It depends what you enjoy though - I do understand why people prefer going abroad!

Have you tried a normal self-catering cottage company? We've just had a 7 night Christmas break in an immaculate 3 bed cottage for £800. That's with Sykes, we booked a good few months ago, but they have offers all the time. Take heed of the reviews, be a bit flexible on exact location and you should have lots of choice.

BBQPete · 04/01/2025 17:35

How many people in your party ?

You seem to be paying way more than we ever do.

Jobs4kids · 04/01/2025 19:52

That seems really pricey for a pub! We had a lovely lodge with hot tub in November in the area you're looking at, 2 nights £400. Used the mumsnet discount as booked through Hoseasons https://www.hoseasons.co.uk/accom/crowhurst-park-lodges-crow?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA1eO7BhATEiwAm0Ee-MtZ9FG2O6rGIAIG8ubCArSBzncJ8unOxpF_jUagvKI7CdO2F6vsJBoCcb8QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Might be worth a look if not too late!

I haven't been back to the UK for a holiday since my parents died (I used to be able to stay with them..

It's really sad as my kids barely speak English and have very little contact with remaining relatives but we can't afford decent accommodation over there. I would love to be able to take them over once or twice a year and show them the places I loved when I grew up over there.

However, time off is precious and due to our jobs only available in peak season and we don't want to spend it in sub-standard overpriced holiday rentals. I'm not wanting a 5 star villa either - just a decent sized cottage with a garden and a fireplace that feels like it could be a home.

I find s/c expensive in the UK and hotels often not really value for money unless you choose really expensive boutique hotels.

I prefer my accomodation to be at least the same as I have at home, I want a dishwasher, washing machine (if I go longer than one week), enough space for everyone to do their own things and not sitting on top of each other.

That means I am not a fan of holiday lodges, caravans or tiny cottages.

We often do s/c in the UK as it means we don't have the hassle of flights, packing everything economically and the country is beautiful with lots of areas we still haven't discovered.
But it's not cheaper than going abroad.
