Places to live in West Yorkshire

We are hoping to move in a few months time. Currently reside in Huddersfield. We at the moment live in a 2 bed end of terrace house with 2 kids so ideally looking to move into a 3 bed. Budget is 210,000. Id like some suggestions on places to live that are nice or surrounded by nature.

My kids are 2 years old and 10 months old so schools right now aren't a worry. We are hoping to move again in the next 3 years with a bigger budget.

Calder Valley- todmorden, sowerby bridge. Would avoid hebden bridge as very expensive- though tbh Tod isn’t far behind any more.

It’s the North Yorkshire border, but Skipton is very much a market town near nature. Decent primaries, not sure about secondary.

You won’t be able to afford 3 beds in Ilkley where the better schools are, or many of the commuter villages that serve Leeds I’m afraid with that budget, but you might look on the outskirts of Bingley, Keighley etc. for smaller villages that will be much more affordable - though beware secondary schools towards Keighley/ Haworth/ oakworth etc.

You will have needed to move before you apply for primary school though ie by October the year before your eldest is due to start primary so realistically in 2 years. So you are looking at moving twice in the next 2 years?

No schools def do need to be considered. You don’t know what will happen in the next 3 years to house prices or your personal circumstances. I’d plan to be wherever you land, longer than anticipated to be on the safe side.

Yes I know but unfortunately we have outgrown this house it's incredibly crowded and we have to move. I know we can't get the perfect house with our budget currently but we will be able to in the next couple of years.

Fair enough if you don't want to say why you want to leave Huddersfield but you do know its one of the cheaper areas in West Yorks so if budget is an issue you might be better staying in the area if you can

Im sorry did you comment to help? I wanted suggestions on places to live. My first consideration is a safe area to raise my children in. I will worry about schools after.

You should be looking at schools now and be guided by that.

Schools aren't just a factor because you want to be near a good school soon for your own family's needs. They're a factor because other people find areas with a good school attractive so it's a future selling point. Hebden Bridge is a nice place, well it was the last time I visited my friend who lives in Halifax near there but that was pre-covid. Why are you looking to pay out all the fees to move (legal, valuation, moving costs, decorating to your wishes etc etc) to pay all these fees again within 3 years? I'm sure you have your reasons but you're out a lot moving twice in 3 years?

Sorry I missed your comment. I don’t mind staying in huddersfield, Im currently living in Lindley. Which don’t get me wrong is a nice area but when we bought this house we got it for a decent price! Now house prices in Lindley for a 3 bed is incredibly high and out of budget

If OP can't afford to live in Huddersfield she sure as heck can't afford Hebden Bridge

I'm not sure how your budget will increase in the next two years (an expected inheritance/money held in trust/savings or an insurance policy maturing/or whatever, I'm not asking for the details) but, if you're certain you'll be moving with a bigger budget within 3 years, would you consider renting until your budget increases by whatever funds you are expecting within 3 years? It'll save you quite a lot of fees potentially and the upkeep of the property is someone else's responsibility. You could ask for advice from W Yorkshire estate/rental agents

We invested our savings into property abroad before having children. The property is in process of being built. We are hoping to sell them in the next few years. This is the reason why our budget currently is so low. We didn’t plan for a second child but it happened and now we are in desperate need of more space

Renting does make sense but at the same time it feels like a waste of money

GranPepper · 03/12/2024 16:48

Am I understanding this correctly - you invested savings in property abroad before having children (2 and 10 months) so say 3 years ago or something, and the property is now under construction. There's more than one property so, when they're complete, you can sell, obtain the profit and invest it in your home in UK. I expect you've put the funds aside to complete the build and hired a local lawyer to protect your interests. This presumed, it sounds as if you are well versed in property and will find a solution to your situation. Good luck

As already mentioned, this is daft unless you've cash to burn on fees and costs. If this is your plan it will likely cost you more than renting over such a short timescale. Particularly if your confident of the overseas development pay-off.

Is there a particular reason for the West Yorkshire restriction?
