York - specifically Clifton near the hospital

A specific query, if you were walking from Burton Ave in Clifton in York, to the city centre, what is the nicest route?

I would say the nicest route is to head to Clifton, left onto Bootham and straight down is the nicest. From the hospital you would go down Clarence Street which is not the nicest.

BamberGirl · 29/11/2024 21:49

I agree with above as the nicest (prettiest?)
there is a cut through over the railway next to the hospital.
i wouldn’t consider any of the ways into town as unsafe though if that’s what you mean. I’d walk them all, though would probably avoid the cut through if very late at night and on my own.

Sharpkat · 29/11/2024 21:58

@BamberGirl totally agree that all of the routes are safe. I almost feel at times that I am so used to York being safe that I am hyper-conscious when I am elsewhere and yet here I never think about it. I wouldn't cut over the railway bridge alone at night. Although in the day you could do that and walk across the old Bootham hospital grounds and onto Bootham.

Hi, Im not concerned with safety as such, I just dont want to walk down busy noisy roads when I could be walking a nice pretty route, with some greenary, footpaths or nice housing etc

Last time we visited we were on the other side of the main road to the Churchill Hotel and so we just walked down the main road or sometimes went along the river, however we are slightly further up this time around Burton Avenue so I saw on the map we could cut across the railway line and wondered if that was pleasant walking?

Can you give the names of roads to walk down as we dont know the area at all

Can you still get down to the river (down the streeet opposite grosvenor terrace?). You can then walk along the river / museum gardens into town.
a lot quieter than walking down Bootham

soupfiend · 30/11/2024 07:56

So for example would we get to Grovesnor Terrace, cut over the railway, then theres a route onto a green space (not named on google) and from there can you cut over to Gillygate?

Are there paths on the greenspace to Gillygate as I dont want to get my shoes muddy

Yes we could although thats a long way round, we'll be walking the route a couple of times a day there and back, between eating our way round the city!!!

You could do that, but it’s not v picturesque!
I would walk along grosvenor terrace (street where you would cross the bridge). Cross over Bootham (at the Churchill hotel), then walk down Bootham Terrace to the river

Is that reply to me, what wouldnt be picturesque?

I think the green space you're referring to is the old bootham hospital grounds.

Bootham hospital (now empty and unused) is a cracking building and the grounds are nice enough - the path is full paved etc, there's a big car park but I think they block access after a certain time - although I think it comes out next to the churchill so you probably saw it on your last visit.

I would say the walk up bootham is more aesthetically pleasing - other than some grass around bootham hospital it's just housing estates and the back of the actual hospital, and a car.park.

ClashCityRocker · 30/11/2024 08:14

Unless you're talking about Clarence street gardens, but that's a bit out of your way?

Sorry yes it was. Over the railway bridge & round the hospital just isn’t the nicest of walks

ClashCityRocker · 30/11/2024 08:21

Just looking at Google maps, the only two green spaces I can see near there are bootham park and Clarence street gardens which you would walk past rather than through to get onto Clarence street which leads onto Gillygate?

Clarence street gardens is just some overgrown bowling greens next to a busy road though. Pleasant enough to walk through but I wouldn't go out of my way to do so, and you'd be heading out of town.

Apologies if there's a third green space that's not showing up on my map! Depending where you'd want to be in town walking down Marygate and into the museum gardens would be very scenic and get you to museum street at the top of Coney street. If you're aiming for the centre of town it would probably be not far off as quick as the route you're taking.

Mumofteenandtween · 30/11/2024 08:25

I would either go through museum gardens or by the river.

So Burton Stone Lane, left onto Clifton / Bootham. Cross the road then right onto Queen Anne’s Road. At the end of Queen Anne’s road you go left onto a path and then either keep going straight on until you get to museum gardens and then walk through. Or you can quickly turn right and head to the path by the river. Beware of a flooding river if it has been raining lots though!

soupfiend · 30/11/2024 18:08

Thanks everyone, i think I will go via the river as suggested
