Hey desperately looking for some advice. I’m out in Portugal (Villamoura) at the moment. My 5 month old son has a history of UTI’s, he’s had 3 since 6 weeks old, and each one ends up nasty (sepsis). He only finished antibiotics from his last one 6 days ago, but he’s showing signs of another. I get so worried to leave them with his history. We’re due back to the UK Saturday, I would like to get a test & get him some antibiotics here asap. Does anyone know the most affordable and easy way of doing this please? I really have no idea what is best to do. We do have travel insurance but have never used it before, and I’ve heard really bad things about the hospitals here :( Thank you.

Can you call your travel insurance provider and see what they advise?

Where are you staying? Can anyone there help?

letmego24 · 08/10/2024 22:11

Is this real?
Eg it's in uk travel
Heard really bad things about hospitals here ?? Right,
Seek medical attention for your baby - find out how to do that asap

You pay and use the insurance when you get home

letmego24 · 08/10/2024 22:12

Just find out how to see a dr. Worry about the rest after.

Or ring a private GP and ask about insurance? There are great expat English speaking doctors very nearby. They'll be online, or you could ring a big hotel chain and ask their reception.

Hospitals in Portugal are great far better than the U.K. if you are in a hotel ask reception to recommend a doctor. If not google nearest English speaking doctor to me or ask on a local Vilamoura Facebook page it will be very easy to find a doctor there is a huge ex pat community

Call your insurance provider for help. You did tell them about his medical history didn't you? If not have you got a ghic card, that reduces the cost

Contact your travel insurance immediately - they will advise.
Wishing your son well

If you are in a hotel, ask them to call the doctor. There may be a doctor that can come out to you but I'm not sure in Portugal. When I was in Tenerife my little boy was very poorly (he has respiratory problems and gets infections incredibly easily). The hotel called a doctor who came to our room to assess him and prescribed us antibiotics straight away. We paid up front and then you can claim back on insurance when you're home. Keep all receipts and logs. I hope you find some help!

itwasnevermine · 08/10/2024 22:15

Look on Google maps for the closest doctor. They're much better than in the UK and will probably come out to you, but it'll cost you.

TeamPlaying · 08/10/2024 22:16

As others have said. Either call your travel insurance provider and they will advise you where to go, or if you’re in a hotel ask them to arrange a doctor and keep receipts.

FKAT · 08/10/2024 22:17

Do you have a GHIC card? Portugal health service has a reciprocal agreement with UK.

Anyway, do not delay treatment for your 5 month old because you're worried about the process. Find a GP or clinic and take him there.

HopefulH · 08/10/2024 22:17

And just to add, we now get antibiotics pre prescribed by our GP to take abroad with us if we're going on holiday. To be used in an emergency. You could speak to your GP about this when you're home.

Mitherations · 08/10/2024 22:20

The medical care in Portugal is perfectly good, you're not in the back of beyond. You're surrounded by English speakers who deal with tourists for a living, seek the help you need.

DangerMouseAndPenfoldx · 08/10/2024 22:20

Medical provision in Portugal is generally better than the U.K. I’m surprised you have heard otherwise.

As others have said, if in a hotel ask them to call a Dr. Otherwise just go to a local Dr. A pharmacist would also be able to help you contact someone.

I hope your DS is in the mend soon.

HellsBells67 · 08/10/2024 22:45

Sepsis three times in five months and he's well enough to travel to Portugal!
