Trike on a bus

Can I take a trike on the bus?

It depends on the rules of whoever operates your local buses.

TfL allow folded bikes all of the time on buses but the driver has the right to tell you it's too busy to get on. Unfolded bikes are only allowed outside of the peak periods of 7:30 - 9:30 and 4pm - 7pm on weekdays. Trikes would come under that same rule.

Our buses have similar rules, but you also can't take on a trike or non-folding bike if there is pushchairs or wheelchairs on board, and our restrictions also apply all day on Saturday and from 11am - 3pm on Sundays.

Unless the rules have changed very recently, you can't take a none folding bicycle on a TFL bus at any time.

Also, a tricycle isn't a bicycle, it would take up much more room.

If you mean a toddler trike then yes. It’s basically a pushchair

Needmorelego · 02/10/2024 17:49

Please don't. It will be in everyone's way and you won't be able to fold it if you need too (ie for space for a wheelchair).
You will essentially piss everyone off.

Needmorelego · 02/10/2024 17:50

@Danikm151 pushchairs need to be able to be folded on a bus. You can't fold a trike (and you really shouldn't use a non foldable pushchair on the bus either).

What sort of trike and what bus company, kind of key info

Not everyone has a pushchair that folds and they have every right to be on the bus

Needmorelego · 02/10/2024 18:00

@teatoast8 on most bus companies they don't.
Signs usually says the wheelchair space MAY be used by pushchairs if no wheelchair user needs the space however pushchairs may be required to be folded at busy times and a wheelchair always has priority.
Obviously it does vary from bus company to bus company but as someone who is a bus nerd and uses buses almost every single day I would say that 95% of buses there is no "right" for a pushchair to not be folded.

I'm also a bus nerd and seen plenty none folding pushchairs on the bus and been no issue

Needmorelego · 02/10/2024 18:16

@teatoast8 it's no issue until a wheelchair user requires the space 🙂
Pushchair users should always be prepared to fold down for a wheelchair at any point in their journey.

Danikm151 · 02/10/2024 18:42

@teatoast8 some toddler trikes can fold up. I don’t know about the buses near you but in the west mids there’s separate spaces for wheelchairs and pushchairs on most buses.

Some buses allow 2 pushchairs and wheelchair 😊

Yes there is on the buses I use. The only time I won't get off a bus with my kids for a wheelchair if it's raining really heavy and have no more money.

Needmorelego · 02/10/2024 19:18

@teatoast8 you won't need to get off if you just fold your pushchair 🙂

If I happen to have one that didn't fold in that scenario, I still wouldn't get off 🙂 but luckily do. Just giving an example why I wouldn't

Needmorelego · 02/10/2024 19:21

@teatoast8 sorry but wheelchairs should take priority.
Children can be taken out of pushchairs and sat on laps.
Wheelchair uses can't do that.
