Where else is otherworldly like Orford Ness or Dungeness?

For an overnight from London - 4hrs drive max - either landscape or abandoned buildings?

I'd say Lizard, but that isn't 4 hours sadly.

Bradwell is a bit like this. Small chapel in the middle of no where, roads that go no where, power station (is it operational, whats going on there?)

Strange sea scape, the sea but not the sea, beautiful but sinister, empty but restless

I need to go back and visit again!

Dartmoor

ImRonBurgandy · 21/09/2024 17:48

North West Norfolk - Walcott

Lots of other places on the Suffolk coast- Shingle Street (it's where they filmed the weird John Lennon scenes in Yesterday) or Dunwich (read WG Sebald's Rings of Saturn first for the full otherworldly experience)..

Norahh · 21/09/2024 18:10

Have been to Shingle Street (after spotting it in the film) - though it was great.

Not been to Dunwich. Just looked up Bradwell - that looks very interesting.

Elmley nature reserve (Medway). They've got some great huts you can stay in as well. Walney Island in Cumbria is also good but more than 4 hours.

Severn Beach?

MissSkegness1951 · 21/09/2024 18:23

This is a nice little walk and church to visit

RAF Menwith Hill in Yorkshire is just about doable in 4 hours. Best seen from a distance are the large Radomes aka golf balls.
For an added bonus you can stay in Harrogate and visit Bettys Tea Rooms.

peachpearplum97 · 21/09/2024 20:05

Holy Island, Lindosfarne

AceofPentacles · 21/09/2024 20:10

Osea island?

Laska2Meryls · 21/09/2024 20:28

Needles Battery IOW . where they tested rocket engines until the 1970s .. But also beautiful seascape and fantastic views over the Needles and the Highdown with fantastic cliff walks and Tennyson monument.
.
Hallsands, Devon, swept away in a storm , and nearby Slapton sands.

The Lizard and Goonhilly

Also I have never been, but also Tyneham and Imber villages in Dorset and Salisbury plain. Taken over for military use but open on some weekends in the summer

EwwSprouts · 21/09/2024 21:03

Push it to 4.5 hours for Spurn Point which is amazing. Slight detour to Sunk Island. Worth 2 nights. Accommodation is cheap in Holderness.

It does get very busy!

Oh and look out for one of the destinations, Brazen Bottom

Imberbus

Providing a classic bus service across the Salisbury Plain to the lost village of Imber

I know shingle street well, it's where the river Alde flows into the sea.

WhatTimeDoYouCallThis · 21/09/2024 21:45

Avebury, the village surrounded by stone circles is both very strange and quite low key, the way you can just walk around and up to the giant, placed rocks, without all the fencing and shop of stonehenge down the road

redtrain123 · 21/09/2024 21:47

The site of the old hovercraft service terminal in Kent.

Nearandfaraway · 21/09/2024 22:03

Oh the sound mirrors at Romney Marsh (obviously you might have seen them already as near Dungeness). Spurn Point is also good as a PP mentioned.

Ineffable23 · 21/09/2024 22:05

Bawdsey is quite otherworldly and abandoned feeling.

Have you been to the (not very) secret nuclear bunker at kelvedon? It's a really extraordinary visit and I would highly recommend it.

SuperGreens · 21/09/2024 22:31

I thought Savernake Forest was quite otherworldly.

Thighdentitycrisis · 21/09/2024 22:51

Chesil Beach ?

TitusMoan · 21/09/2024 23:05

Elmley is a good shout, as a pp says.

Up on the moors east of Manchester on those creepy roads. Shudder

dayswithaY · 21/09/2024 23:14

Red Sands Fort in the Thames Estuary, Canvey Island, as previously mentioned - Secret Nuclear Bunker in Kelvedon Hatch, Shoeburyness.
