Isle of Wight, no car

I'm taking my youngest along with my friend and her 4 kids. One little, the rest teens. We plan to stay in Shanklin or Sandown. Neither of us drive, so going via train. Half Term.

Can anyone recommend any good attractions/places to go that are easily accessible by bus or train on IOW? Ideally not £££.

I've been to the IoW the last 4 years with my older teen and stayed in Shanklin. I don't drive.
The bus service on the island is really good and we've had no problems getting around. There are a couple of tourist buses called Breezers which go round the island but you would need to check out the level of service in October.
We also don't mind a good walk!

But from Shanklin we have got to the following on buses/walk
Sandown pier

Black gang Chine
Godshill model village
Animal Sanctury
Dinasour world
The Needles
Newport
Osborne House
Shanklin Chine
Carisbrooke Castle
Cowes
Ryde - bowling and laser quest
Steam Railway

There is loads more that we haven't got round to yet
I assume you are getting the train to Portsmouth Harbour and foot ferry over.

The ferry connects with the Island Line train service which stops at Shanklin and Sandown

One think you might want to consider if you haven't booked accommodation yet is staying your first night in Portsmouth and having a day there. There is the Historic Dockyards and Spinnaker Tower. There is a Premier Inn opposite the Dockyards and a couple of minutes walk from Portsmouth Harbour station.

I haven't been in October, except for a day trip, but we did go early in the season one year and was surprised at how early some of the restaurants stopped serving dinner so just watch out for that
Otherwise - it's a great place to go and you will have a fab time

As long as you stay in the big resorts you'll be fine. Newport is the big interchange for buses. The railway is good too. We went all over by PT, and we don't drive. It's easy to get to from Portsmouth too.

Thank you, that's great, really helpful!

Yes, getting passenger ferry Portsmouth to Ryde. That's a really good idea to spend a day in Portsmouth first.

What we do if possible is get to Portsmouth late afternoon, check into Premier Inn, go for a wander and get dinner out in the evening.
Premier Inn will keep luggage for you, so we go out straight after breakfast - you can fit in the Dockyards, Spinnaker tower and a quick mooch round the shops in Gunwharf Quays in a day, collect bags and get ferry over about 6.30. It only takes 15 mins on the ferry
