Manchester help!

Posted on Chat thread but thought I'd move to here!

Hi all

We are coming over from Ireland as a surprise for my OH birthday to watch a Man Utd game. We will stay 2 nights. I had originally planned to stay in Salford Quays/ Media City area but was talking to a family member who recommended we stay in Manchester in a hotel called Yotel in Deansgate. I'm now second guessing my decision to stay in Salford Quays area.

Could anyone recommend the best option? Main thing is the hassle of the crowds getting too and from Old Trafford. We are happy with somewhere we can grab a few drinks!

Also while I'm here...any nice restaurants for a celebration?

Thanks in advance

Salford quays is a bit soulless. You can easily get the tram between the city centre and quays; it’s also walkable
I’d stick with Deansgate

NigelHarmansNewWife · 07/09/2024 19:56

For the restaurant, what kind of food do you like?

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 07/09/2024 19:58

You can get the tram out to Old Trafford for the match and back into the city. It’s not a long journey, even if the tram is a bit cramped on the way back.

We love a good steak! But not an overly fancy restaurant that would have Oysters for starters if that makes sense! Budget wise, as its a special occasion, I'm happy to pay if its worth it

I should've said it was Premier Inn in Media City I was looking at.
Have you any recommendations for a nice hotel in Deansgate? We've stayed in the centre before in the Crowne Plaza near the Northern Quarter so not sure if we should go with this again

Hawksmoor!
Stay in the City! The Lowry is lovely in SQ but expensive.

DaftDeafDuck · 07/09/2024 20:28

If you want to sample the atmosphere of the city my recommendation (Manchester resident) would be to choose a hotel in the centre and get the tram to the match. There are lots of hotels to choose from (Booking.com to see the range and you can always book direct). It will be busy after the match, but the transport network is efficient and the crowds disperse quickly so you can make your way from Old Trafford to town at your own pace. Don't know much about Yotel, but it's bang smack in the centre of town so would be great base. Have a look at Motel One and Leonardo's - both decent and sensible prices.

The Lowry hotel isn’t in Salford quays. It’s just over the border into Salford but close to Manchester City centre. The Lowry theatre is in Salford quays.

@Pippy1820 for steak you should go to Hawksmoor which is on deansgate and near the Yotel that has been recommended to you. Also nearby is Moxy hotel. One of the best cocktail bars in the world is right by there too -

The Lowry will be massively more expensive that the Yotel recommended to the OP.

Pippy1820 · 07/09/2024 21:55

Thank you so much everyone. I have checked out the recommendations, Google mapped and that area is perfect for us. So I have priced Yotel and The Lowry. Yotel coming in at £335 and The Lowry £305, should I book the Lowry for this price? Just to note, unfortunately it's Easter weekend, the only weekend I could arrange for family to mind the kids!

The Lowry is a great hotel. Pretty much just behind Deansgate, so perfect for restaurants and bars.

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 07/09/2024 21:59

The Lowry isnt as convenient for the tram is all I would say

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/09/2024 06:53

The Lowry has nice rooms but if all you need is somewhere to sleep, I wouldn't pay £300 a night.

The Midland (St Peter's Square) is lovely and very convenient for trams.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 08/09/2024 07:53

Well I was wrong! I thought Yotel was a budget hotel. I'd look at Tripadvisor reviews, etc before choosing, but as a pp has stated, the Lowry is not as convenient for the team to Old Trafford.

If you're there Easter weekend all the shops, pubs, bars and restaurants will be open apart from on Easter Sunday.

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 08/09/2024 08:25

Other nice hotels conveniently located for the trams and city centre are:

  • Moxy (just off deansgate near the Ivy/Hawksmoor)
  • king st townhouse
  • malmaison Manchester Deansgate (which is not actually on deansgate but between there and the tram stop at St Peter’s square)
  • Dakota (near Piccadilly station)
  • Hilton (on deansgate, near deansgate castlefield tram stop)
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/09/2024 08:39

Regarding restaurants, it depends what you like, but we've had some lovely meals at Maray and the Sparrows.

Pippy1820 · 08/09/2024 09:40

You are all great! Thank you so much for taking the time to recommend. I have had a look at all the hotels recommended and nothing coming in at under £300 for the 2 nights but I know that's the weekend that's in it.

The exact date/time has yet to be confirmed for the match and I won't know until probably Feb or March if it will be the Saturday or Sunday. If we do the Saturday to Monday, we will be there all day Easter Sunday. Do bars and restaurants close for Easter Sunday in England? Mainly shops close here in ireland and the rest stay open!

OP posts:
Clearinguptheclutter · 08/09/2024 10:13

@Pippy1820
shops do close here on Easter Sunday but there shouldn’t be a problem with bars and restaurants. Everything will be open on the Saturday and most things on the Friday/monday

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 08/09/2024 11:41

As PP says bars and restaurants will be open on Easter sunday

Pippy1820 · 08/09/2024 21:10

Thanks everyone!
Have done lots of googling today and it's a toss up between Malmaison Deansgate and The Lowry. I'll keep reading reviews and decide in the next day or 2

The team usually stay at the Lowry the night before a game.

Abode hotel at Piccadilly - beautiful old building with fabulous decor.
