Avoid London during carnival?

Hi, am thinking of taking my kids to Tower of London tomorrow but DH has said to avoid because of carnival. I'm thinking it's on the other side of London so what's the issue? We would have to travel by tube from west London to Tower Hill. Anyone has any experience or thoughts on this?

I agree with your DH, was gonna take the kids to Brighton but live in London so would need to take the tube then the train but don’t think it’s a good idea during carnival as I imagine it will be crazy busy but maybe I’m wrong as never been carnival so will be nice to hear what others think

Would you avoid London because of a football match, or any other large event.

Probably not.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/08/2024 11:26

Do you mean Notting Hill?

Can’t see the problem. Tower of London is fabulous, enjoy.

HelenWheels · 25/08/2024 11:27

i dont think london comes to a standstill
you wont be in the area affected

Needmorelego · 25/08/2024 11:27

The carnival is in Notting Hill which is absolutely nowhere near the Tower of London. Completely opposite sides of London.
The tube might be busy in the Notting Hill area. Which tube line would you using?

SocksShmocks · 25/08/2024 11:28

I think you’ll be fine as long as you’re not near the carnival itself. London is a big place. The tube might be busier than a usual weekend but no busier than during the working week.

London has massive events all the time, I’ve barely even noticed when carnival is on unless in that precise area (or the tube around there), other than that you might just see a few people in fancy outfits which is nice!

theduchessofspork · 25/08/2024 11:29

Eh? It’s in Notting Hill. It doesn’t impact the whole of London.

nightisyoung · 25/08/2024 12:01

Thanks for all your replies. We would need the jubilee line to Westminster then district line to Tower Hill

@nightisyoung

I think that you would be fine.

If you pick up the District Line at Ealing Broadway, it will take you all the way to the Tower, avoiding the tube stations recommended for the Carnival.

You should go!

It would be a shame to miss out on a nice day out because there is an event taking place in a part of London you won't be going through!

mynameiscalypso · 25/08/2024 12:07

I've lived about 15 mins walk from Notting Hill for the last 20 years and I've never been to Carnival, let alone been bothered by it at all. You'll be absolutely fine.

BooToYouHalloween · 25/08/2024 12:12

You’ll be fine. Jubilee line nowhere near the carnival, neither is the Tower. At worst you might see various revellers on the tube before they change lines. But it won’t be as bad as the overground/central/bakerloo lines which go through it.

InfradeadToUltraviolent · 25/08/2024 12:17

London is enormous. I'd never hesitate to head out into the centre on Carnival weekend.
Apart from the obvious crowded area Paddington will be super busy, because that's the recommended tube stop. I'd suspect that Westfield Shepherds Bush might be busier than usual, and Brixton often has after parties.

But your route should be completely unaffected.

Seeing all that daggering going on, I definitely want to steer clear of it. Just to be clear, I’m talking about the dance move, not any knife-related stuff.

… ok, so cos there’s dancing you don’t like, you’ll avoid London for the whole weekend? Sounds very sane

Avoid the area? Absolutely. Impossible for me to avoid London completely, though!
