My dh wont stay in butlins/hoseasans type places but would like to go away on south coast (no further west then dorset). The only places suitable to 22 month old we can find are butlins etc! Anyone suggest any where?

Isle of Wight has loads of places

Don't limit yourselves - 22 months olds can go anywhere!

Waterside in Weymouth is nice, it has a pool, including a toddler pool, it has an outdoor play area. The kids club is limited but does fun things but you dont have to leave them you can stay and have some family fun it you fancy it (we did this whilst it rained and daddy had a lie in, but my DC's were older than yours)
Its right by the sea/beach. There is a bus going into Weymouth's lovely sandy beach (although it is only a 15-20 minute stroll if you fancy a walk)

How about Corfe Castle? Camping, B&B's and holiday cottages in abundance.

If you do want to camp I know an absolutely wonderful campsite in Folkestone if you're interested.

Sandbanks in Dorset has a fabulous child friendly beach.

Bournemouth has nice sandy beaches, but our favourite is

West Wittering

for a traditional bucket & spade (non-commercialised) seaside
