Is Birmingham safe to go to tomorrow?

Myself and my best friend are meant to be going to Birmingham to see Hamilton tomorrow. It will be just us and I don’t know if it’s safe with all the riots?? Feeling a bit scared. Seen so much about it on mumsnet.

It's difficult to know what to do.

My Mum was going to an event tomorrow in Sheffield but it's been cancelled as there are demonstrations/riots planned there. I'm glad that the decision has been taken out of her hands because she would definitely have gone otherwise!

Personally I probably wouldn't go.

What does your friend think?

I wonder if it’s worth me ringing the theatre?
My friend is equally as nervous but we don’t want to miss out and lose money over being over cautious.
I don’t know Birmingham that well so I don’t know if there would even be riots near the theatre or along our journey from the station.

There are no “protests” planned until the weekend so you’ll be fine.
The hippodrome is on the outskirts of the city centre anyway.

take the back entrance of grand central and walk straight down hurst st. 🙂

Grapesoda7 · 07/08/2024 08:39

From what I've heard there is meant be protests today and Sat 17th in Birmingham. You should be OK tomorrow I'd have thought. Which station and theatre is it?

There are apparently a whole host of protests planned across the country today. It's horrible and scary.

I'm going in on Friday and not concerned. It's the 17th I'll be staying away from the city centre

Booob · 07/08/2024 17:03

Hi would like to no is it going to be safe to go to Torquay next week with all this going on and is it safe to go by train

mums2323 · 07/08/2024 20:07

We’re meant be staying in Birmingham from Friday over weekend to meet my daughter friend and stay at a hotel in Birmingham me and my friends daughter have got travel quite 3 hours to get the will it be safe we planning shopping ect we’re panicking where it’s safe to do so

Generally protests in birmingham tend to focus around centenary square, near Symphony Hall. I've seen protest marches around between there and Five Ways. However, these have been agreed protests, where the route has been agreed in advance with the police.

The concern currently is that these are riots not protests, so they are not in an agreed location, which means it's unpredictable. There's a risk that the shops will be targeted (for looting) or that charities that support refugees outside of the centre will be targeted, or areas of the city with larger communities with Asian heritage. Until it happens, it no one can know for certain.

I wouldn’t this weekend. It could be fine, but the videos from the last few protests/riots/etc in Birmingham have been ugly.

I’m going to Birmingham on Saturday to check out the city with my Son who starts Uni in September. Are we really saying it’s going to be no go…? Where are these ‘riot city’ lists…?

Which Uni and how are you getting there?

TicketyBoo11 · 07/08/2024 20:54

Birmingham City and we’re just driving down for the day from the North. Mooch round the Uni area and pop into the city centre.

My husband works on Broad St and they've been warned about protests by New St Station tomorrow afternoon and they've cancelled some planned activities and advised staff to work from home if they can (my dh's role means he has to go in).

Could you give me more information on this please as my DD has plans in Broad Street Thursday afternoon?

SuncreamAndIceCream · 08/08/2024 08:45

It will be fine

(I lived in Birmingham for 20 years until recently)

Far too much social media misinformation being taken seriously and I include all these businesses/ offices closing in that.

The peace protests yesterday and the sentences being handed out has cut a lot of the mass appeal of getting involved at the knees.

There may be a few opportunists around but unless you're planning on joining a counter protest you probably won't even notice.

I believe there are protests planned for near Grand Central Station rather than Broad Street but I've not heard more yet.

Mumofmarauders · 08/08/2024 11:01

We were in town (central Brum) yesterday, didn't hear a peep. All seemed normal. Sounds as though the action was in the jewellery quarter, which isn't where any of the theatres are (and as though it was mostly peaceful counter protests) so you'll probably be grand.

Plimsoll73 · 08/08/2024 11:06

They're in Birmingham at the moment on This Morning and it looks peaceful.

I live near by, the media and social media are playing a lot of this up. Just carry on and live your life.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/08/2024 11:14

After the heartwarming counter protests last night, I don’t think we’ll see hide nor hair of the scumbags on our streets for the foreseeable.

Enjoy the shows!
