Gatwick to Emirates Stadium

Hi helpful London people!

My son and husband are going to a game at Arsenal FC, emirates stadium later this year.

They'll be flying in from abroad, and I think will most likely fly into Gatwick.

They'll arrive the evening before, and need to travel to a hotel- probably just a premier inn that they can then easily get to the stadium from the next day, probably on Piccadilly line.

They won't need to go anywhere else, so any premier inns or similar with access to the Piccadilly line that they can get to from Gatwick?

Looking for the easiest journey for them from Gatwick. They won't really have luggage, just a small travel bag each so can hop on a train - easier still if they'd not need to book tickets in advance.

Any help welcome, thanks .

Might be worth finding something near Gatwick if not exploring London and it is not an evening kick off. Trains run directly from Gatwick to Finsbury Park which is walking distance from the stadium.

Not aware of any hotels near the Piccadilly line north of Finsbury Park.

Suggest you look at hotels at Victoria, there’s a good selection round there
Rail/tube: Gatwick to Victoria (Gatwick express-direct) then Victoria line on the tube to Highbury &Islington, change (easy, just cross the platform) one stop to Drayton park, this train runs every 15 minutes, and you’re at the emirates stadium

There are Premier Inns and Kings Cross or Leicester Square (Piccadilly Line), or Euston and Victoria (Victoria Line).

It's an easy walk from Highbury & Islington.

I would decide if they want to do anything at all in addition to the match, and then decide which hotel to choose.

You can use contactless all the way from Gatwick Airport into London, so no need to book train tickets.

Thameslink from Gatwick to Kings Cross. Stay at KingsX Prem Inn or similar. Take tube (Victoria Line) one stop to Highbury & Islington, five minute walk to the stadium.

Great, thanks all! Makes it sound a lot less complicated than we were expecting!

Re the contactless - is it that simple you just tap on the yellow thing on your way in and again once you've exited? Can you use the same card for 2 people or do they need one each?

No you need a card each. Or buy tickets from the machine. Personally would prefer to stay in Victoria area than Kings Cross, then take Victoria line to stadium on the day,

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 05/08/2024 08:57

It is that simple, but you would need different cards. And you'd probably need to get a ticket for your son if he's under 18 to get a discount. If you go with King's Cross, say, then a single from Gatwick would be enough.

Gatwick train to London Bridge then tube northern line to Angel. There is a premiere inn there and you can walk or bus to the stadium. It’s a nicer area to stay than near the mainline stations.

Kings X is much better than Victoria to stay in. Loads of restaurants, shops, lovely walks down by the canal, big screens showing sports and films etc.

You could also stay in Finsbury Park if you wanted to be close, lots of things there to do and walkable to the ground. Aim for Finsbury Park as they often shut Arsenal station and Highbury and Islington on match days due to overcrowding.

Thameslink from Gatwick to Kings Cross. Stay at KingsX Prem Inn or similar. Take tube (Victoria Line) one stop to Highbury & Islington, five minute walk to the stadium.

Agree with this suggestion - the simplest!

leeverarch · 05/08/2024 09:13

Hotels near Gatwick are going to be much cheaper than in central London, and the tube really won't take all that long.

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 05/08/2024 09:15

Never seen Highbury & Islington closed on a matchday. Arsenal station is designed to allow the a large number of people to go one way.

Holloway Road tends to be only one way, otherwise the above post is nonsense.

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 05/08/2024 12:26

Actually, they do occasionally close H&I to incoming traffic temporarily, for a few minutes at a time, to allow crowds on the platform to ease, but it's never been closed completely.

Until recently I was a season ticket holder.

Blisterly · 05/08/2024 12:27

I lived there for 15yrs and they did often close H&I!

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 05/08/2024 12:30

Not on match days, it was the station I always used!

Westfacing · 05/08/2024 12:31

I think a hotel around Kings Cross is better than Gatwick. That way the next morning, the day of the match, you are in the general vicinity of the stadium should there be any travel interruptions, JSO demos, signal failures etc!

BornLippy88 · 05/08/2024 12:49

They close Drayton Park station, but it's only a 10 minute walk from Highbury and Islington so no need to make a transfer anyways.

I don't think they ever close the arsenal picadilly station but you might have to queue !! Budget permitting a hotel next to the stadium would be ideal.

This is what I was coming on to suggest.
