London museum

My daughter is keen on a museum and I'm thinking the V&A is a good option especially as it has a Taylor swift exhibition on.
Thinking of making a few days of it train tickets are over £100 for the day with a rail card.
Happy to drive to the outskirts from Gloucestershire. Slough is somewhere we have been before. Any recommendations of other places to stay which has easy access to London by train and not cost a fortune. Looking at a couple of days around the third week of august. Also any recommendations of accommodation. Thanks

Try University Rooms https://www.universityrooms.com/en-GB/city/london/home/

We lived in London for a few years, in the 70s, and visited lots of museums and galleries
My favourite was the Science museum.
However, we never visited the British Museum, so on a trip there last December we visited it, before they have to return sone exhibits, and also Westminster Abbey. Both were fantastic. The Egyptian stuff is stunning as are the Elgin Marbles. As for Westminster Abbey. They have a new gallery up in the roof, with some fab effergies from old Royal funerals, clothes from various people, including Nelson ( he wasn't very tall). My favourite thing was a prayer book that had been altered, quite badly, to suit Henry 8th. Then there are all the royal tombs, great for anyone interested in uj history.

How old is your daughter?

Wow, I certainly wouldn't recommend Slough!!

Somewhere out West on the Elizabeth Line?

Or just a Premier Inn pretty centrally?

We drive into central London and use the Just Park app to find a drive of other parking space for about £20. Much cheaper even with £15 congestion charge and much better for shopping or taking bags - only need to carry to the car....

Kids week is on through August - half price theatre tickets for a variety of shows (not all little kid stuff) you might be able to find a show she’d enjoy. https://officiallondontheatre.com/kids-week/

She might also like a wander around Chinatown. My kids like to go get taiyaki (little fish shaped donut type snacks).

Be aware that the South Ken museums are INCREDIBLY busy in the holidays! Have a look at the Horniman- maybe a little less busy?

mondaytosunday · 03/08/2024 23:24

I just checked booking.com for a couple nights in August and a few came up under £300 in South Ken. I'd do that rather than park on the outskirts. You could then dump your car at a pre-booked garage and walk to V&A etc.

How old is your daughter? In addition the large V&A, there is also the childrens V&A in Bethnal Green. It has toys through the ages and is interesting for both adults and children alike. Bethnal Green has a travelodge which I've heard is reasonably priced- never stayed there though. It and the museum are all within a 2min walk of each other and the tube, which is on the Central line. Its 40mins to the larger V&A.

Depending what days of the week you go, on a Sunday, the Colombia flower market and Bricklane markets are only a short walk away from Bethnal Green.

Thank you for all the ideas. Will look at driving and parking options. Daughter is watching Taylor swift in a few weeks time and there is an exhibition at the V&A.

Ahh, I wrongly assumed she was about 7 😂
Which rail card have you got? There is a 2 together card which lasts a year. Maybe not be worth it for 1 trip, but 'might' work out cheaper than whatever you currently have. DH and I went from London to Edinburgh and made back the cost of the card in the 1 trip.

Two Together Railcard

A Two Together Railcard costs just £30 and it'll save you 1/3 on rail fares for you and the person you travel with most throughout Great Britain

We went to the V&A last week. It wasn't too busy, we just walked in. The Taylor Swift exhibition was amazing and really well organised. There were short organised queues for some things and everyone was really respectful and considerate so you can get some great photos.
Maybe look at places to stay in Hammersmith then you can jump on the Piccadilly line to the museums.
