Child free unusual London ideas

I'm meeting a friend in London next week - we both have 2 teenage boys and go to London with them regularly but visits usually revolve around burgers and trainer shops so I'm looking for quirky, interesting things to do child free!

We're staying in Southwark so we'll spend some time pottering on the south bank / borough market. I wanted to get Skygarden tickets but that's not looking likely. We both know London well and don't need to do big sights, but looking for any little hidden gems.

@mamaduckbone

There's a Literary Walking Trail, if you fancy a stroll.

This is right up my street, thanks!

London silver vaults on lincolns inns Fields and the gardens in inner temple. Get your lunch at pret and walk to there

Its forecast to be 31 on Tuesday so might not be a bad idea🥵
I think we're going for the gardens at 120 Fenchurch (thanks @TheSquareMile) and a general mooch in that direction - maybe Leadenhall market as well. My friend can't walk miles and it's going to be roasting hot so plenty of drinks stops and pottering - very much looking forward to not doing the usual West End / Covent Garden / Soho schlep that we do with the teenagers. Thanks for all the ideas! Anything else in Southwark / City area that might suit?

@mamaduckbone

Re Leadenhall Market, it featured briefly in one of the Harry Potter films.

The one appearance of Leadenhall Market in Harry Potter

This is the only time that Leadenhall Market - located in London, England - appears in the entire Harry Potter series - in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's...

Bermondsey street. Fashion and textile museum and the the white cube; other galleries on the road too and some gardens. Maltby street food market is near by. You could book a garden table in The Woolpack pub.

So many interesting places to eat in London, why would OP resort to Pret?!

The Barbican Centre could be an idea close to the City especially as its hot. You can sit outside by the lake or inside and get food and drink, or walk the walkways.

Viktor Wynds museum. Not if you're easily offended. There's a great absinthe bar there

I meant grab a bite and go sit in inner temple

StoatofDisarray · 28/07/2024 15:13

Skygarden is overrated: there are better views and because of all the vegetation and the restaurant in the he middle of the open space it's full of the sound of clattering cutlery and glass and smells of cabbage!

Echobelly · 28/07/2024 15:17

Be warned, Borough market is unbelievably crowded these days, you might want to go a bit early for lunch or dinner. I think it's been all over social media, particularly in the US in the last two years so you are really having to elbow your way through in summer.

Definitely recommend the Sir John Soane museum.

Had a lovely couple of days 120 Fenchurch is stunning, as were the cocktails in the bar on the 14th floor.
Thanks for all the ideas - plenty to save up for future visits.
