Hello, wondered if anyone could help. I am British, as are my parents and partner and children. For my 1st child application for passport, I sent their birth certificate, both British passport numbers from our passports. Passport came back within a few weeks. About a year ago, my 1st child was 1 year old. I have done the same for my second child. They wanted birth certificate for her. So all sent. Received an email and they want further documents. Including my mother’s birth certificate. So my child’s grandmother. I do not understand why they would want this. When I’ve held a British passport all my life and my first child didn’t require all this. They also want marriage certificate, my birth certificate, I have contacted them twice. They wearnt very helpful and said if that’s what they want, that’s what you need to send them. Has anyone had any experience of this? Have they made a mistake? Thank you.

Did you send details of your and your husband's Passports this time?

YourSnugHazelTraybake · 18/07/2024 18:23

I'm going to assume you and your husband were both born after the 1980's. There's been a relatively recent change in procedure at the passport office and if parents are born after 1983 then grandparents documents are required as well as parents. There's been quite a few threads on here about it recently.

Yeah I had to send it for one child and not two of the others. It does say in the paperwork they may request further documentation I'm sure.

How old is your first child, the rules have changed, possibly between your two children. Just send what they ask for and get the passport

Or maybe its simply a random check

TiredArse · 18/07/2024 18:37

Were you all born in the U.K.?

username47985 · 18/07/2024 19:10

I applies for all four of my Childrens passports at the same time. One came back requesting the extra information.

I assume it's just a random check.

Thank you everyone. I didn’t know if I had genuinely made a mistake on the application. Yes both of us born after 1983. I had to upload husbands details on the application. Yes both British and grandparents and further back etc. all have British passports since born etc. I just thought it seems odd asking for my mother’s details. Yes first child I applied for about one year ago and this one a few weeks ago. They don’t seem very helpful on the phone, when I asked why, they said I have to send what they’ve asked for and that was it. Surely they know we’re all British from issuing me and us a British oassport for all these years.

It's hardly a relatively recent change - we've had to do this for all of DS's passports & he's 16 now.

I didn’t do it for my last child (about a year ago) and it was his first passport. That’s why I thought was a bit odd, as all details are exactly the same, (apart from the person) ill send them off, just wondered why and the reasons for this.

Thanks @Blondebar for this post. I'm in the process of renewing 2 dcs passports (9 & 17) and applying for my other dcs first passport (8). After seeing this I called the passport office and they confirmed I'd need to do the same, you've saved me a lot of time and extra postage!

Although I also can't understand why I didn't have to do it with my other 2s first passports!
