Arriving in King’s Cross—would you wait?

We’re visiting London from Scotland next week (6 hour journey). We get in to King’s across at 4.50pm. We need to get the tube to Edgware Road. Would you just go straight to the tube? I’m expecting it to be packed? I was wondering about just waiting around in the station until after 6. Would it be quieter?

Sorry tube

theferry · 14/07/2024 21:35

Many thanks. Don’t want to fork out for a taxi. Don’t mind busy, just didn’t know whether it would be shoulder to shoulder.

I also have a big wheeled suitcase and manage fine.

Have a good trip!

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 14/07/2024 21:50

It'll be better at 5 than at 6

Belindabelle · 14/07/2024 21:55

How many are travelling because a taxi may not cost that much more. Well it will cost more but it could be better value.

cestlavielife · 14/07/2024 21:57

How many are you? If you all chip in for a taxi it might not cost much more than the tube tickets

Echobelly · 14/07/2024 22:00

Just get on the tube. If it's a Monday or Friday it shouldn't be that bad anyway now that a lot of people aren't in the office on those days.

There’s 4 of us.

I would imagine 6pm to be busier than 5pm but you are going against the flow so to speak so you will be fine.

HesterLee · 14/07/2024 22:02

I would go straight to the tube. Try not to dawdle and walk one behind each other and you'll be absolutely fine. It might be busy but regular users of the tube expect that

HesterLee · 14/07/2024 22:03

I mean expect people with suitcases

TimeandMotion · 14/07/2024 22:07

Also it’s not a small tube (curved top carriage type that go deep underground) it’s a big square one so more room.

How are you paying for the tube? Buying a travelcard with your train ticket? Oyster/contactless? Because prices will differ and with four of you, you might find it’s not that much different to the cost of a cab.

maltravers · 14/07/2024 22:08

Taxis are expensive, especially with 5pm traffic which will be slow. Take the tube as soon as you arrive, it should be fine.

A single fare in peak time is £2.80 per person. Depending how many you are, a shared taxi may work out much the same, and will be easier with cases. It's only around 15 minutes drive.

If you're committed to the tube, I think you'll be fine at 5pm on a Wednesday. In my experience it's busiest 5.30-6.30, but even then it's nowhere near as busy as previous years before home-working really took off.

MaggieFS · 14/07/2024 22:19

The thing about King's Cross underground is that if you have big suitcases and need to use the many lifts to get down to the platform, you will have walked the equivalent of about half the distance to Edgware Road just to get to the platform.
If you have small wheelies which can go on escalators, it's much less faff.

Surely there's a bus which runs down the Euston Road? If you really don't want to get a taxi, I'd do that. (But because of the faff, not because of how busy it could be).

GoingRate · 14/07/2024 22:26

Kings Cross is always busy. Just get the tube.

You'll be fine getting on with cases at 5pm, it will be busy but manageable. Please don't take the cases through the normal gates though (used the wider disabled gates) and don't use the escalators, use the lifts even if it's a slightly longer walk. If one train is full let it go and get the next one, take any backpacks off before you get on or you'll smack people in the face...

Great advice.

Westfacing · 14/07/2024 22:40

Don't wait around for a quiet time on the tube, it might never happen. Loads of people will have cases, backpacks etc. Sometimes if the carriages are really packed I wait for the next one if the indicator is showing that it's one or two minutes behind.

It's not always shoulder to shoulder - you'll be fine

thedendrochronologist · 14/07/2024 22:44

Get a taxi- it's much less stress.

When I fly from Heathrow I get a taxi from to King's Cross to Paddington to catch the Heathrow express

It's about £15. Suitcase on the tube are annoying.

Copperoliverbear · 14/07/2024 23:42

If it's been many years since you came to London you are in for a shock. X

BobbyBiscuits · 14/07/2024 23:45

No point, it's always busy, but not that far. Just grin and bear it. It only takes about 10 mins.

Curious why? It’s been about ten years.

It will be crowded at 5pm and 6pm but the journey is only 7 minutes. When you are on the platform watch the first train that comes in and see if one of the ends is less crowded then than the middle then stand on that part of the platform for the next train.

cestlavielife · 14/07/2024 23:52

For 4 of you and given the worry about crowding just pay a taxi will make life more pleasant and less stressful . What''s a few ££ each?
