Booking.com Compromised

Hello all, this is just a heads up to avoid/be super careful when using booking.com

For my last two bookings I’ve had fraudulent attempts to get me to ‘verify the booking’ by giving my bank/card details. I’ve spoken directly to the hotels which confirmed the messages were not from them.

It comes from the booking.com official messaging system and I’ve also had WhatsApp messages direct.

Their system must be completely compromised and I won’t be using them again.

Take care out there!

I've not had anything and have used them numerous times this year. I suspect, your account is compromised.

I've read about this a few times. Booking.com's messaging system does seem to be easy hacked so always worth checking direct

I had this just last week. The hotel confirmed that it wasn't from them. The email from Booking.com looked genuine. I can usually spot a scam but this was very convincing. I did click on the link and thankfully my payment was declined. I phoned the credit card company to report this. They were able to assure me that the money had not been paid out but for peace of mind I cancelled my credit card and had a new one issued.
I'll be booking direct in future, instead of third party bookers.

It’s possible however the messages are coming through the official booking.com website/system which I don’t have access to so I’m fairly sure the problem is their end.

Nonetheless I've changed my password and use 2 factor authentication.

booking.com hasn't been compromised - the problem is hotels that are careless with their booking.com login details, or allowing access to their email.

An email from booking.com itself is legit. A message from a hotel "via booking.com" could well be a scam - have your wits about you and call the hotel to confirm.

There's no more need to avoid booking.com than there is to avoid Gmail because you've had some scam messages via there. Just make sure you know who the message is from and don't send any money other than via booking.com.

Sorry to hear you got caught out, it is very convincing and glad you didn’t lose any money.

This was on the TV, it is the hotel's system being hacked and the scammers using the hotel's details to contact you through the genuine booking.com system, then the scammers re-direct you to their system where they try to get you to pay, so the payment goes to them not the hotel.
