Darlington or Middlesbrough?

DH has a work day in Middlesbrough this summer. Thought we'd go and spend the weekend nearby beforehand, I've always fancied Darlington but is there somewhere someone could recommend that's within about a 45 min drive of Middlesbrough that would be nice to spend the weekend?

Depends what you want to do.
If you want a city, then maybe Durham.

If you want countryside ... massive choice within striking distance - north York moors, the top of the Dales (Richmond), north Pennines AONB...

AcrobaticCardigan · 26/06/2024 18:40

Yes, Durham. Or York?

FinallySummerNow · 26/06/2024 18:42

Not sure about whole weekend but I really like Hartlepool Historic Dockyard (National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool). Otherwise would recommend Barnard Castle, visit the Bowes Museum, High Force waterfall, and Raby Castle

Oh you could go to Kynren at Bishop Auckland too, that would be awesome

FairisleFairy · 26/06/2024 18:46

I’d recommend somewhere around the North York Moors, lots of nice places to visit in the area, walks to do
Helmsley’s nice but a bit further north & east might be better for you

FairisleFairy · 26/06/2024 18:48

Or you could do Whitby, runswick bay, staithes

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/06/2024 18:49

Whitby

OrganicAlchemy · 26/06/2024 18:49

I really wouldn't recommend Darlington for a weekend break tbh 😅 Go with the other suggestions 😇

FinallySummerNow · 26/06/2024 18:51

Upvote Whitby!

ErrolTheDragon · 26/06/2024 19:02

York is a good hour from Middlesbrough

CoastalCalm · 26/06/2024 19:06

Whitby , staithes or robin hoods bay

FIFIBEBE · 26/06/2024 19:28

Don't go to Darlington!
The coastal areas mentioned are lovely but I'd choose the Richmond area option. You could visit Northallerton and surrounding areas too. You would be living my fantasy retirement in one day.

Newtrix · 01/07/2024 18:03

Darlington is absolutely horrendous!! Definitely not somewhere for a break. Durham is so much better.

Blinkingmarvellous · 01/07/2024 18:09

Bishop auckland is fascinating- still run down but also the focus of massive regeneration. You could go to kynren, visit the Palace and faith museum. And there are various other attractions and a hotel aucklandproject.org/

Wouldn't recommend Darlington or Middlesbrough (fairly local).

Costal places - Whitby, Sandsend, Staithes, Skinningrove, Saltburn or any of the little villages in between that might prove better price and parking wise.

Over the moors way - Guisborough, Danby, Castleton, Great Ayton, Yarm, Helmsley, Stokesley and again any of the surrounding villages.

There’s a spa in Darlington, Rockliffe Hall it’s lovely for a weekend stay, we often go and you don’t even need to leave the grounds (if you don’t want). It’s about 30 mins from Middlesbrough. Just depends what sort of weekend break your after relaxing or activities

MargotEmin · 01/07/2024 18:43

Going to Darlo for the weekend is the North East equivalent of going to Slough. Get yourself to Durham, or do the North Yorkshire coast instead!

inaterribleplace · 30/07/2024 08:32

Thank you everyone for your suggestions, we went to Durham and had a fabulous time - what a lovely place. @FinallySummerNow I took your advice and we went to Kyren - it was brilliant!!
Planning to do another trip later, next time heading to Whitby.
@MargotEmin your comment about Slough made me laugh out loud :)
