A day in Bristol

Hi all

Wonder if you can help me planning a day in Bristol. I’ll be meeting a friend there on a Saturday in summer. No DC with us so looking for places to eat, nice shopping, stopping for a coffee / drink when we feel like it, maybe a bit of culture.

We will both be heading into Bristol Temple Mead - never been to Bristol but it’s easy ish for both of us so any tips appreciated!

Thank you

I would head up to Clifton (number 8 bus from Temple Meads or a quick Uber). The city centre is a bit shit and the shopping isn’t much better, but Clifton is lovely to walk around. Lots of nice little shops and places to eat, plus the Downs is great for a walk with amazing views of the suspension bridge!

Agree on Clifton being nice especially if it's sunny. Clifton Village is lovely, nice delis, little shops, cafes to look round.

I agree with the previous poster that Clifton is lovely, and the view of the suspension bridge is beautiful. There is a small museum next to it that provides a bit more information. The Avon Gorge Hotel is situated a short walk down from the bridge and has a large terrace where you can enjoy the lovely view over a coffee or wine.

In town, the SS Great Britain is well worth a look. There are some nice independent restaurants and bars in Wapping wharf (very close by). They get busy so you'd need to book on a weekend if you plan to have lunch somewhere there.

Around the harbour you can also do the Bristol Packet tour- this takes you around the centre, you'll see the SS Great Britain and The Matthew, and you'll glimpse the suspension bridge. It gives some history of the harbour and a bit about Bristol generally.

Catch the ferry from behind the station and take a tour of the harbour. You can get a hop on /hop off ticket. Around the harbour is the SS Great Britain, The Underfall Yard, the M Shed museum and the Arnolfini art gallery as well as lots of places to eat. I'm not sure if We the Curious has reopened though.

Don't bother going into Broadmead or Cabot Circus. It's pretty much got the same shops as any other city centre.

And then from the harbour you could wander (or 24 bus) down to North Street and it’s surrounds and enjoy all the new artwork that’s just gone up as part of Upfest.

If you did go up to Clifton there is the suspension bridge to walk across. Alternatively, from North Street, it’s a short walk through Greville Smyth park and out onto the footpath beside the river, where you can get a lovely view of Clifton and the bridge.

Thank you for all the great responses! Sounds like Clifton is a good bet and looking forward to doing some planning. Boat looks good too!
