Commuting from Wokingham/Twyford to London (Aldgate)

Hi there

We’re moving to the UK in a few weeks and I’ll live between Wokingham and Twyford. I’ll be commuting three days a week to London (Aldgate station).

Is there an easy way to work out the different train and tube options and the associated costs? I’m wondering if an annual pass for example might cost less than paying for an individual ticket three times a week.

Currently I have lots of websites open and I’m guessing there’s an app or an easier way to do this.

Thank you!

Have you looked at the national rail season ticket calculator? I’d definitely opt for Twyford over Wokingham as far as routes go - you can just get the Elizabeth line to Whitechapel (or Liverpool Street depending where your office is) and it will be quicker and simpler than the painfully slow line from Wokingham to Waterloo. I think three times a week is roughly where it becomes worthwhile to get an annual ticket unless you’re eligible for some kind of railcard that you can use on peak fares. Most employers offer an interest-free season ticket loan so you don’t have to pay for it up front.

Thanks @Teamarugula this is really helpful.

I have just started looking at the national rail calculator. Do you know if a national rail season pass covers the tube or do I need a seperate travel card for that?

Have a look at a flexi season ticket if you're only going in three days a week, it'll knock a few quid off your national rail journey (doesn't work for the tube though!)

Are you eligible to buy the Network Railcard on that route?

If you’ll be driving to Twyford, please bear in mind that the car park is quite inadequate and there’s not much parking within walking distance of the station. But Twyford is the better commute.

@Lookingforanewschool you can get season passes either with the tube (listed on the ticket as London zones 1-6) or without (ticket says London terminals). Rail routing is excessively complicated so I did just look up whether you could just use a London terminals ticket from Twyford to Liverpool Street on the Elizabeth line and I’m 90% sure you’d need a London zones 1-6 ticket, and you definitely would to Whitechapel. If you went from Wokingham you could use a London terminals (no tube) ticket to take the train from Waterloo East to London Bridge and walk about 20 minutes from there to Aldgate though!

@TitusMoan both stations are in the network railcard zone, but you can’t use it before 10am Monday-Friday
