Brita water jug for Uk hotel stays?

I feel like this is a stupid and dull question but I can’t find the answer by googling it. We have a 5 day round trip coming up and will be driving from Scotland to wales with various overnight stops and I was just wondering if it’s safe to drink bathroom water from the hotel rooms if we bring a brita water jug. Does anyone know?

I know you can boil the water but it would be handy to have the jug as a place for the water to be stored as we will then be able to use the kettle for teas and coffee without worrying about pouring the water waiting for it to cool etc. We are travelling with a toddler so would prefer not to have to lug bottled water around as will have enough luggage as it is!

It's safe to drink the tap water with or without the water filter.

Thanks.I wouldn’t usually drink water from a bathroom in a hotel as I thought water from tanks could be vulnerable to contaminants and water from the mains/kitchen is safer. Not happy to take the gamble with DC’s drinking water either but perhaps I am being OTT 🤷🏻‍♀️

London tap water has been through the sewage system approximately 27 times. It has trace elements of oestrogen and flouride, and smells and tastes foul. I never believe people who say they can't smell/taste it. I think they just attribute the smell/taste to 'water'
and block out the reality.

InTheRainOnATrain · 18/06/2024 13:33

I wouldn’t drink it unless boiled. I don’t know how you’d know whether it was system where it comes from a tank in the loft which isn’t drinking water, and I wouldn’t start grilling the receptionist about it. Nor would I rely on a brita as they don’t filter bacteria. It’s a driving holiday- swing by a supermarket and buy a crate of mineral water.

SaltyGod · 18/06/2024 13:35

What what what? I’m genuinely shocked that people don’t drink tap water in the UK! This place is amazing sometimes.

I’ve always drunk tap water from hotels without a second thought.

I drink tap water from a kitchen tap obviously!! OP is on about the bathrooms, which you’re not supposed to drink from if you have a tank system because let’s face it when did you last clean the tank?!

cuckyplunt · 18/06/2024 13:39

You can drink cold water from bathroom taps, of course you can. It’s the same stuff as is delivered to the kitchen.

Not if it's from a tank. The kitchen can be mains and the bathroom tanked.

I drink bottled water in hotels.

TheTripThatWasnt · 18/06/2024 13:43

I stay in hotels at least once a week for work and it has never occured to me not to drink the tap water. You will be just fine without your filter jug or kettle.
The bottled water industry has a lot to answer for, with very subtle promotion of the myth that there is an issue with tap water.

In any public space in the UK, water which is NOT safe for drinking has to be clearly labelled.

Gymmum82 · 18/06/2024 13:44

You can drink tap water from any cold tap. Be it bathroom, kitchen or any other place.

The only reason you can’t is if it’s from a tank (which is uncommon these days) and that is for hot water. It also needs to be labelled ‘not drinking water’

So you’ll be fine drinking hotel bathroom water

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/06/2024 13:45

Scottish tap water is really nice but we still filter ours and it tastes that little bit better. Yes, take the jug (though both are perfectly safe without)

SaltyGod · 18/06/2024 13:46

@InTheRainOnATrain

Isn’t all UK mains water totally safe?

Storage tanks, if used, would be inspected and kept clean. Short of staying in an Dickensian Victorian hotel, I’d consider it safe. And if the water didn’t meet drinking standards wouldn’t they be obligated to make that clear with a sign that it wasn’t for drinking?

We have an attic water tank and drink bathroom tap water. Wondering if I need to inspect the tank?!?

Nellymadeofjelly · 18/06/2024 13:46

I’d be more worried about the rumour that people pee in hotel kettles 🤣
I’m not bothered about the tap water but even though logically I know the kettle thing is most likely rubbish I can’t get the thought out of my head!

CheeseWisely · 18/06/2024 13:48

Never in my life would it occur to me to filter or boil the tap water in a UK hotel and I'm very much still alive and kicking.

I'd expect any hotel with non-potable water in the bathrooms to clearly warn as such.

Have you inspected it?! We found it partially uncovered with all sorts of bits floating in it when we moved into a previous house 🤢 Hands down why I’m paranoid now. And some B&Bs are a bit Dickensian in vibe so wouldn’t trust them. Big hotel I reckon you’re probably fine though.

Singleandproud · 18/06/2024 13:54

We always just pick up a large bottle of water for drinks in the room and boil the tap water for hot drinks. Or pop down to the bar and as them to fill up our water bottles.

I won't even drink from my kitchen tap. I'm in a hard water area and the water tastes greasy🤢

I also saw a ‘news’ article about a woman who boils her knickers in hotel kettles 😂 I always wash out kettles at hotels and then do a test boil for this reason. Completely unnecessary, I’m sure!

I always fill the hotel kettle to the max and boil it and dump the water the first time I use it, in the hope that should the horrific stories I've read on MN are true it'll kill anything.

This is what I do for exactly the same reason 🤣
