Break the journey Northumberland to London?

Hi

Just booked a week in Northumberland in August and we are going Friday to Friday. The day we arrive we will have to do the journey from London in a day, but coming back we might add on a night or two somewhere to break the journey and extend the holiday.

Any suggestions or recommendations? Thanks!

What do you want - city, countryside, coast?

Sheffield and the Peak District is about half way. Castleton/Hope or Bakewell are nice to stay. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is just north of Sheffield (5 mins from M1 J39) is well worth a visit if you are travelling pastry in the M1 through Yorkshire anyway.,

Ooh the sculpture park is excellent - great tip!

You could go to Whitby (easy train journey from Newcastle) which is fabulous.

Coast or countryside preferably - something that feels like it extends the Northumberland coast vibe. (We live in London so city breaks by train are easy)

Yorkshire Wildlife Park now has a hotel on site. It is a brilliant day out. They have got some baby cheetahs, have successfully bred another Amur leopard and have just rescued a lioness and her cubs.

It is just off the M18 near Doncaster so is easy to get to from the A1.

Ah thanks, I've heard nice things about the Yorkshire sculpture park so that's a good shout. And Peaks might be good as well, we've been there a few times.

It's a bit of a trek from the M1 to the Peak District. It depends how much time you want to add to your journey.

PrincessMee · 18/06/2024 17:09

Whitby!

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 18/06/2024 17:43

I’d probably do Runswick Bay or Staithes, then across the NY moors to the Star Inn at Harome.

RampantIvy · 18/06/2024 17:47

It's still quite a hike from the North Yorkshire coast to London. I was under the impression the OP wanted to be a little closer to London before stopping over.

Another vote for Yorkshire sculpture park - it’s where we went on the way home from Northumberland to London! We stayed the night before at a Travel lodge right off the M1 at Wakefield, then spent the day at the sculpture park and drove all the way home from there.

EwwSprouts · 19/06/2024 17:51

You could easily do the sculpture park in the afternoon of the day you set off. Have the next day at Yorkshire Wildlife Park which is brilliant. It's not far between the two so one hotel for two nights.

Or Northumberland is all about the castles so Chatsworth.

Who is “we”? Are there kids involved and how old are they?

Useyourfork · 19/06/2024 20:25

You could pop off at Hardwick hall, straight off the M1.
If you join the National Trust here then you can visit Cragside house in Northumberland 😊

Which part of Northumberland are you going to coast or hills? We are on the hills side, well worth visits to rothbury,Berwick,Alnwick, bambugh, etc etc loads of castles to

AlphabetBird · 21/06/2024 23:42

Sherwood Forest?

fussychica · 01/07/2024 10:34

Ripon. Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, fabulous but may not be far south enough for you. Hardwick Hall or Chatsworth in the Peak District for somewhere further south.
We're on holiday in Northumberland at the moment, it's raining and rather cool!

Artisfun · 01/07/2024 19:07

Hardwick Hall is good
