Solitude by the sea

Hi all,

I have two children and I’m a carer for my parents who both have dementia. I’m stressed and exhausted.

For my 40th DH has offered to take me away somewhere. We’ll get carers in for my parents and the in laws will look after DC.

Honestly, I can’t remember the last time I had a moment to myself and all I want is to go somewhere where I can switch off and be alone.

We can’t go far as I wouldn’t want to leave my parents and DC for too long. Probably 3 nights.

In my mind, I’m picturing a cabin perched on the edge of a lake surrounded by mountains and trees in Norway somewhere. Or a lone house on a remote Scottish island by the sea. The kind of place where an eccentric writer might disappear to for months to overcome writer’s block and create a masterpiece.

In reality, it would ideally be somewhere with wifi to keep DH entertained so he leaves me in peace while I curl up with a book 😂.

The main criteria is somewhere with scenic views from the windows and somewhere I can step outside for walks without ever having to see another soul.

Does a place like this exist (reachable from Manchester)? I’ve spent ages trawling through Airbnb but just get cabins with hot tubs in a holiday park (I’m exaggerating but not far off) and don’t know where else to look. We don’t mind a longish drive (within 8 hours say).

Thanks in advance!

Try searching the Rhinns of Galloway area South West Scotland , beautiful scenery and not crowded . If you go onto A75 at Gretna it should be about a 3-4 hour drive in total .

Go to Mull.. Actually a magical place...

Tavia123 · 15/06/2024 23:59

Thanks both. Do you know of any accommodation in those places that would match my description (isolated, away from hotels and other accommodation)?

Try the cottage websites, e.g. Sykes etc. They usually have a filter option where you can make a variety of choices to narrow down what you are looking for.

Ah you can have my list of places I keep in case I need to escape the world for a bit (well the UK ones which are vaguely coastal, and all in Scotland I now realise):

Callakillie, Wester Ross
Lodge on the Beach
An Airigh, Isle of Skye
New Orleans Cottage, Campbeltown
The Cabin Skye
Tigh Beag

Anglesey?

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 16/06/2024 04:51

Try rural retreats. They have a couple of lighthouses - they’re usually solitary and/or remote.

Thanks so much for the suggestions and links everyone - I really appreciate it! Some of these look perfect for what I’m looking for. I’ll check availability and book one of these!

Lindisfarne?

The tanaquil otter just near Carlisle. The beauty go the lakes and Solway away from lots of people and only 1 1/2 hours from Manchester.

I was going to say Mull too. There's plenty of spaces in Tobermory (however I've not stayed in them as we stay with family) but it's not busy busy as the population is small. However I would avoid the time when either the car rally or the music festival is on as that really does bring the visitors. We have stayed at the Mull and Iona Spa Hotel for a family wedding. It has views back towards the mainland.

Have a look at Wilderness Cottages in Scotland.

What an amazing collection! I need to book holidays in all of them!

I don't have any specific cabin details but in general look at Dumfries and Galloway or Northumberland or, funds, situation and time allowing, take the ferry over to Northern Ireland and head for the North Coast. As beautiful as Scotland and even less crowded. There's also North Wales as an option, not too bad a journey from Manchester. Enjoy what sounds like a much needed break when you've decided.
