DH, DD ( 16) and I are having a few days in Weymouth at the end of the month. Any suggestions on what to do? DD loves fashion, theatre and ducks.... We are not particularly adventurous...
Thanks x

For duck-adjacent interest, the Abbotsbury Swannery is a good place to visit. Abbotsbury is about 9 miles west of Weymouth, and easy to get to. It also has some lovely sub tropical gardens that are worth a visit while you're there. En route to Abbotsbury, you'll pass through the village of Portesham which does actually have ducks (there's even a duck road sign to alert drivers to their presence!).

Not sure about fashion or theatre - the closest decent shops or theatres are really Southampton or Exeter (both of which are about 90 mins away). Weymouth Pavilion has summer shows, but very touristy. Poole lighthouse might have something good on, which is closer.

Thank you x I'll give that a look.

We did a 4wd farm safari. It was over this farmland talking about the wildlife and trees etc. pointing out badger tracks etc. it was quite interesting.

Go up to Portland Bill
Take a boat ride from Portland Harbour (if you are lucky you will see the dolphins)
Go to the Old Harbour and mooch around- there are pubs and touristy shops
Go to Nothe Fort and/or Portland Castle
Eat at the Crab House Cafe and Portland Bill's
Walk on Chesil Beach
Go to the Sea Life Centre (cheesy but fun)

Not sure there is much fashion in Weymouth unless you count Kiss Me Quick hats.

@hels71 - just “up the road” from Weymouth is the county town - Dorchester - which has productions on at the Corn Exchange in the town centre. There are events there at the end of June/early July.

You can take the no 10 bus from Weymouth which stops a few yards from the Corn Exchange, or just two local train stops from Weymouth. Also plenty of (cheap) parking in close proximity.

www.dorchesterarts.org.uk - has all the listings at the Corn Exchange and there is an outdoor play “The Comedy of Errors” at Maumbury Rings in Dorchester on 26 June.

Also outdoor theatre at the lovely Athelhampton House:

Also check listings for small theatre events in Dorset at

To see ducks in an authentic duck pond and river setting, do go to the pretty village of Sutton Poyntz on the outskirts of Weymouth. The Springhead pub there is very nice too!

I have the River Wey at the end of my street and usually we have loads of ducks and ducklings - but sadly Mr Fox seems to have taken them and our neighbour’s cats have also had the ducklings recently. So sad.

@hels71 - if you’re willing to go to the picturesque Georgian market town of Blandford Forum (40 minutes drive from Weymouth, there is also a bus service) your daughter might enjoy the cute Fashion Museum. It has a tea room too:

Hope this helps :)
