New Forest? (Romantic break from London)

Hi,

Looking for advice about the New Forest as i really dont know the area, and where best to stay as a couple locationwise. Air bnb is showing lovely places nearer Dorset/Shaftesbury etc but I'm confused if that's nearish! We just want a self contained romantic place where we can make breakfast, a few walks, maybe see the beachfront, good foodie places.

Or any other tips for 2-3hrs drive?

You won't get London style designer apartments in the Forest with £1000 coffee machines and giant fridges (or Deliveroo/Just Eats)!

Loopylooni · 16/05/2024 09:59

@Dearover just a kitchen and a giant bed😀

Still looking! Montague arms had some bad reviews which put me off. The Pig is crazy expensive!

I’ve never stayed in the Montague Arms but Beaulieu is a lovely, idyllic location. I’ve just checked and Google has plenty of good reviews if you want some reassurance!

LoreleiG · 22/05/2024 08:10

Ps I’ve heard bad reviews of the Pig, there will always be someone who isn’t happy.

CrotchetyQuaver · 22/05/2024 08:30

Montagu arms will be fine. Beaulieu is lovely, Sway well worth a look for self catering. Open forest at the end of the village.

Also have a look at hotels in lymington, you are only a few minutes away from the actual Forest heathland by car...

soupfiend · 22/05/2024 08:37

We stay in the New Forest a lot, always use an airbnb, we've stayed in some lovely places, I try to get a pub within walking distance. Most recently stayed in Blissford but have also stayed in Beaulieu, Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst and environs

Pooky001 · 22/05/2024 09:01

We usually stay around Fordingbridge - lots of nice places around there

Loopylooni · 22/05/2024 09:01

@soupfiend @CrotchetyQuaver @LoreleiG thanks all, my partner isnt keen on places at the end of someone's garden and there seems a lot out there. We also want somewhere nice but relatively soundproof so we cant hear others and vice versa! We are also tall.

Requirements : giant bed, reasonably large shower/bath, sound proof, kitchen for breakfast only. We will no doubt go for long walks and also nice meals out.

So far ive limited my view to Brockenhurst but does anyone know if Frogham is nice?

If anyone can recommend any nice hotels or B&Bs, that would be brilliant.

Any recs for restaurants too, other than the pig? Great views are always a bonus

Fine dining
Verveine in Milford on sea (fish)
Elderflower on the cobbles at the bottom of Lymington near the quay

Normal but very good
Rays Italian kitchen in Milford on sea
Monkey brewhouse Lymington

Lots of good places to eat.

Frogham is nice, proper out in the sticks there!

@CrotchetyQuaver is the Jetty any good? and Elderflower?

Yes both very nice, Jetty is gorgeous but parking can be tricky there FYI. I've eaten at both.

The Pig on The Beach has a pizza oven and bar outside for more casual dining. You can’t book but it’s lovely on a sunny day. But yes, the restaurant and hotel are expensive. I mainly go there when my parents are paying 🤣

Also to clarify re Pigs, it is indeed a chain but I meant the two that get muddled up due to their proximity (people book the wrong one) are the Beach and the Forest.

waltzingparrot · 25/05/2024 21:50

Had some lovely meals at the Fleur de Lys gastro pub in Pilley just outside Lymington.

Loopylooni · 28/05/2024 20:32

@waltzingparrot just booked this!
