Holiday in Lyme Regis

RiojaLover75 · 02/04/2008 20:57

It's our first time holidaying in Lyme Regis, we've got a cottage for a week in April. Can anyone recommend any places to go or similarly places to avoid?? We have two children aged 10 months and nearly three.

Any advice gratefully received, thanks.

Donkey sanctuary at Sidmouth down the coast is great

I love Lyme Regis and am very

Do search for Lyme or Dorset in the search thingy as I know lots of people have suggested all sorts on MN before and there are so many wonderful places.

Personally I'd go to Lulworth Castle and play hunt for the rats (stuffed!) as you wander round the castle. Fab.

Hoh! We are going in July. Must visit those donkeys.

The Donkey Sanctury is free too. Beer is lovely and we like the Pecorama.

Parking is terrible in Lyme, we always try to stay right in the town with parking, which really limits the choice of cottages. Last time we stayed in a sea view flat and that worked really well. Where abouts are you staying?

There is a really good dinosaur museum on Church Street (the Church has lovely views too), and the Philpot Museum is good, but the children prefer the dinosaur museum. I quite like the Chinese, DH likes the fish and chips The Town Mill bakes its own bread, worth checking out. I am told that the guided fossil tours are excellent, and would be interested to hear how you get on if you try them, we havent yet. We love rock pooling and generally mooching. Our DC are not old enough to sit still for crabbing but I have fond memories of it!

A few years back I would have put the Aquarium (on the Cobb) on the list, but it is very poor value for money now.

Charmouth is nice too, its a better beach for a long walk than Lyme as its flat sand.

I wish we were going! We went in October last year and the weather was so lovely and mild there were people in the sea!

Oh yes, that donkey sanctuary is lovely.

Blandmum · 10/04/2008 12:56

I met up with a MNetter at the Donkey sanctuary but I don't think that she is there all the time!

Beer is nice, but the beach isn't sandy

we also did the Fleet Air arm museum and the Tank meseum at Bovington, but they would be a bit old for your two, Rioja

Dont forget Monkey World!

Hi! Back from Lyme Regis, weather was a bit strange but we had a great time. Mumma2cjh, we stayed here www.cottages4you.co.uk/uce/c4y?view=details&action=readDetails&cottageId=423502&holidayPark=N&sleeps =4&propertyTypeId=&complexId=, it was fab. Great views and a lovely modern place!

We went to Monkey World, Weymouth Sealife Centre, Lyme Regis, Exmouth (don't ask why!)and Abbotsbury. TFTT, Lyme is lovely! So much more to the town than we'd thought. Great fish and chips down a little side street (can't remember the street), awful Thai restaurant though. Brilliant cafe at the top of the main street called Madhatters.

Love, love, love Lyme. My parents have a house there. (If only they weren't in it half the blasted time so we could use it as a holiday home!!).

Glad you had fun, I do think it is a special place.
