Does anyone have any suggestions of where we could go please
DD will be 10 the week of May half term and would really like to take her away for a night or 2
We're in the north east and will be using public transport so somewhere with decent links to the north east
We've been to London, Edinburgh, Liverpool, York, Newcastle and Birmingham over the last couple of years plus done beach trips to Scarborough and Blackpool
Would love any recommendations of places to visit or attractions we could try

What sort of things does she like doing?

Snuzzle · 28/04/2024 13:21

She loves football and animals, likes science, museums and beaches.
We've been to just about every zoo/safari park in the country and done the Anfield tour twice(Liverpool supporter)
She loved dynamic earth in Edinburgh and the life centre in Newcastle.

Skip the beach this time and take her to Oxford.

Pitt Rivers Museum
Ashmolean
Christ Church Picture Gallery 😍

Countless other museums and galleries + of course endless colleges to gaze upon - either on a tour or just from the outside. And the Headington shark!

Looks good though trains from my location are super expensive
Any outdoor recommendations in the area, she loves being outdoors for at least some of a break

If you had a History buff I’d suggest:

Stratford-upon-Avon for a play, historic buildings and a detour to Compton Verney.

If a foodie child:

Altrincham. You wouldn’t need to travel outside the town centre at all; it’s just bursting with fun places to eat indoors or out. Plus an excellent Everyman cinema and Dunham Massey close by.

With 120 acres of art, nature, and creativity Compton Verney is an extraordinary place to visit; inspiration and imagination, outside and in.

Sorry - crossed you!

Oxford is filled with green spaces -starting with the University Parks.

There are always things to do on the river (google, I’ve forgotten!).

And of course:

Not sure Stratford is up her street sadly

We've actually stayed in Altincham though didn't spend much time looking around as it was just a base for us when visiting events nearby but we did eat in the town both nights we were there and it was great

(See my post above yours!)

fandjango · 28/04/2024 14:01

Manchester, they have the football museum, science museum, imperial war museum, manchester museum plus loads of lovely places to eat and visit too

Scotma · 28/04/2024 14:02

Belfast is really nice and child friendly. Small city easy flights!

Invisimamma · 28/04/2024 14:08

Glasgow? There's the Scottish football museum and stadium tour. There's also Glasgow science museum, Kelvin grove museum and lots of cool places to eat and shop in the city centre.

CormorantStrikesBack · 28/04/2024 14:21

Cambridge? Botanical gardens and the Fitz museum. Nice architecture, punting.

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 28/04/2024 14:23

Second suggestion for Glasgow.

trains super easy from NE, plenty of football, science, art, shopping and outdoor things.

Forgottenmyphone · 28/04/2024 17:32

Manchester for the National Football Museum, Sea Life, Science and Industry Museum, Chill Factore….

MiddleAgedDread · 30/04/2024 10:39

pmsl at the prospect of a city break in Altrincham!! It's boring middle class suburbia, there's no tourist attractions unless you go into manchester or salford quays.
Glasgow might suit - Kelvingrove museum, science museum, riverside museum, you can get a train to Balloch on the shores of Loch Lomond.

StrangeNew · 30/04/2024 11:06

That’s ok, @MiddleAgedDread - you don’t have to go!

However, some children (not the OP’s) are keen on food - and for that Altrincham would be excellent. The covered market and Market Hall and surrounding streets are absolutely stuffed with good places to eat, to the point where weekends feel like a food festival. And yes, Manchester and Salford are close by if one wants alternative entertainment.

(Bear in mind the town was recently named one of the best places to live in the country …)

Fortunately there are endless interesting towns and cities worth visiting with children. I miss those days!

MiddleAgedDread · 30/04/2024 11:11

Oh trust me, I’ve spent more time there than I care to imagine @StrangeNew ! It’s just not somewhere I would recommend for a holiday and half the time you can’t even get a seat in the market food hall. Best place to live not best place to holiday!

StrangeNew · 30/04/2024 11:19

Heaven’s sake - I’m talking about a couple of days! And just one out of the many, many days / weekends away any fortunate child might enjoy. They don’t all have to involve exactly the same attractions. And you might not take a child who will only eat unadorned pasta. But I’ve spent many happy times exploring menus in an unfamiliar town with a willing child. It’s fun.

I think we must agree to differ on this … Grin

Pieceofpurplesky · 30/04/2024 11:42

If you haven't done Chester zoo then Chester is a good place. Lots to do - escape rooms, sick to death museum, walking the walls and lots of places to eat. There is a wizard golf opening up soon too.

Easy to get to Cheshire Oaks, Blue Planet etc

siameselife · 30/04/2024 11:57

Do you think she would like a mini cruise from Hull to Amsterdam?
The one we did was more like a ferry than a cruise ship but fun and a couple of days in total.

EwwSprouts · 01/05/2024 15:56

If you choose Manchester you could include Jodrell Bank.

I think the Hull to Amsterdam option is inspired! Could also go to The Deep in Hull en route.
