Somewhere nice near Doncaster?

A nice to visit / stay location near-ish Doncaster - is there such a thing? I'm sure there must be, but as a softy southerner I'm sure I don't know where! Barnsley, Rotherham, Scunthorpe... they're not places exactly renowned for their tourist offering, are they?

We will be visiting for a wedding later this year and thought we might make a long weekend of it and get a cottage for a few nights somewhere within an hour's drive of the city. Not further away as we'll have to make the drive a couple of times.

I'm mostly after recommendations of an attractive location to base ourselves and some places to visit (we like history, art, gardens, nice scenery) - but if you happen to know of a specific accommodation for four adults then feel free to recommend - we do prefer self-catering to keep the costs down.

Come on Northern Mumsnetters, please prove to me that it's not all grim up north!

I like Harrogate and York, both within an hour of Doncaster.

Lincoln is lovely, there's some nice cottages near Donnington. Or go the other side of Sheffield to the Peak District - Hathersage or somewhere.

We stayed in a beautiful AirBnB near Wirksworth recently, a converted chapel. That's enough info to find it! And the whole area was lovely, great walking super pubs for food reasonably priced. That must be about 45 mins away? So history I'd recommend Lincoln (cathedral, castle, magna carta, etc), scenery Peaks.

I've never been, but the kids went on a school trip to Conisborough Castle, and enjoyed it if you want something to do nearer Doncaster. And Sheffield is a lovely city to spend some time in too with good places to eat.

I'd say somewhere around the Peaks would be perfect. Day trip wise Yorkshire Wildlife Park is fabulous for a day out.

Yorkshire sculpture park is a wonderful day out and close by. The Hepworth in Wakefield would also tick the box and it's about 40 minutes away. 40 minutes in the other direction is Hardwick Hall. Best of Hardwick was a fascinating character.

Whilst you're in the area, Yorkshire Wildlife Park is well worth a visit. In terms of places to stay, there's some lovely quaint villages out on the Huddersfield side of Barnsley - Monk Bretton etc (very convenient for Yorkshire Sculpture park and Wentworth Castle Gardens). The Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield isn't far, and is worth a visit. It's worth checking what's on at Millennium and Graves Galleries, the City Hall, Crucible and Lyceum in Sheffield whilst you're in the area, and Wentworth Woodhouse, near Rotherham is also good to visit (there's also a lovely independent garden centre with good restaurant in Wentworth, and some nice accomodation too, as well as walks taking in the Wentworth monuments and Elsecar heritage centre nearby).

Conisborough Castle (English Heritage) might make a nice afternoon for you.
PS -oops - somebody else already mentioned this!

There are some decent places to stay/visit around Doncaster itself - Mount Pleasant Hotel is nice or the Crown Hotel in Bawtry (a small market town near to Doncaster).

In terms of places to visit nearby - Brodsworth Hall and Gardens or Conisburgh Castle (both English Heritage sites) or maybe Cusworth Hall.

Lovely walk around Sprotborough Flash Nature Reserve / canalside if the weather is nice (the Boat Inn in Sprotborough is a good place for food / drinks).

The Yorkshire Wildlife Park is also popular and also Yorkshire Ice Cream Farm.

Lots of other options within easy reach - Sheffield, York, Harrogate and Leeds.

Yorkshire wildlife park is definitely worth a visit if you’ve not been just for the polar bears . Yorkshire sculpture park I would give a big swerve a huge hike and not much to see .

Saschka · 26/04/2024 00:46

Bawtry? Retford? Pontefract? All pretty close to Doncaster. Nice little market towns, you’ll find a pub with rooms or airbnb.

Actually, just looking on Airbnb there are loads of holiday cottages close by which look nice enough.

Thank you. Some interesting ideas. Most places have something to offer if you give them a chance.

Cottages in the grounds of small stately pile https://carltont.dbm.guestline.net/availability?hotel=CARLTONTOW

Howden is a small market town with independent shops and usually something cultural going on.

Agree with others you need to include an outing to Yorkshire Wildlife Park. It's spacious and they do a lot for conservation. Just taken in lions rescued from Ukraine. The polar bears and their canoes are the best (none new captives, just a better quality retirement).
