We are meeting up with some friends for the day in Marlow. We would like to tag on a day or two either side. Have googled obviously but it's hard to prioritise what comes up. (Friends are visiting from abroad, it's just one of their stop off points so they don't have any local info).

We like walking; visiting lovely towns, villages etc; lovely scenery. Not sure if we'd base ourselves in Marlow yet but would like good pubs/restaurants for the evenings. No children to entertain!

You can walk down the river from Cookham. There is a nice waterside pub in Cookham itself.

There are nice woodland walks through the grounds of Cliveden (NT). You can walk through the woods then drop down to the river to walk back.

Burnham Beeches is not far either.

Thank you @WASZPy

You could walk along the river to or towards Henley

Gorgonemilezola · 12/04/2024 07:37

Windsor, nice walking in the Chiltern, several NT properties, Bletchley Park.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 12/04/2024 07:53

Definitely Cliveden and a day to Windsor & Eton.

If you get the train to Bourne End (one stop from Marlow) there's a lovely and quirky pub called The Bounty which is right on the river, and only accessible by foot or boat, so you have to walk back over the railway bridge to get there. There's also a lovely walk along the river there and a marsh at the end with some horses and cattle, with a giant hill behind you can walk up.

MudandParsnips · 12/04/2024 07:55

Oh, and there's a nice tapas restaurant over the river from the called El Cerdo which I would recommend for dinner

VeronicaBeccabunga · 12/04/2024 08:24

Please check before planning to walk along the river, the towpath has been flooded recently, as has The Bounty pub.
Cliveden [NT] is a good suggestion as it's high above the Thames.
Windsor is not too far by car, Henley is nice with Greys Court [also NT] nearby.

OMGitsnotgood · 12/04/2024 08:38

Ooh thank you, looks like we'll be spoilt for choice!

Very nice pubs to eat at in Cook ham, just down the river. You're also not far from Henley - nice walk along river to Hurley. Nice shops in Henley. Avoid Maidenhead it's a dump! Also not far from Windsor and Runnymede.

londonloves · 12/04/2024 10:21

Oh The Bounty is a great shout if forgotten about that! Also some v high profile restaurants in Bray if that's your thing.

toomuchicecream · 14/04/2024 21:19

How interested in fine dining are you/they? Tom Kerridge Hand & Flowers plus other places in Marlow, Bray for Fat Duck, Hinds Head, Waterside Inn if that short of thing floats your boat.

Where would you want to stay? I agree that some parts of Maidenhead are run down (but definitely not dangerous) but the bottom end of the high street has lots of lovely places to eat and it's been redeveloped in the last 2 or 3 years - it's completely different now. There's a Premier Inn/Travelodge in Maidenhead!

londonloves · 14/04/2024 21:46

Yeah I wouldn't say Maidenhead is dangerous to be fair, just a bit meh. But you're right the new bit by the "canal" (flood ditch) is nice, would recommend Copa Club. And the river is nice towards Boulters Lock. Basically if you can see water in Maidenhead you're probably in the right area 😂

If you have a car, you’re only a 30 minute drive from the Oxford park and ride!
A day in Oxford is always lovely

crackofdoom · 14/04/2024 21:55

Ex Marlovian here, and I definitely agree that the Thames Path- in either direction- is the best thing to do there. Walking towards Henley is unexpectedly quiet for the South East....it's really lovely. Before Henley you come to the Flower Pot at Aston Rowant, which is a quirky, interesting pub with food. Do you like art? There's the Stanley Spencer gallery in Cookham.
