We're travelling from Hertfordshire to york next weekend for 2 nights, driving in and staying centrally
We've got afternoon tea booked but apart from that no real plans
Anything we should check out, things to see/do/eat. Not massive museum people but don't mind a bit.
Thanks MN

Walk the walls, the dungeon can be a laugh depending on what you enjoy. The minster is worth a look too (again, depending on what you enjoy, and not sure how much it costs to get in for non-residents)

The bloody tour of York with mad Alice is brilliant

The Minster is really nice to look round and the shambles, we didn’t buy anything in the shops at the shambles but it’s lovely to walk down.
York has lots of great bars and cafes. We went to a lovely tapas place as well 🙂 I think it was called ambience. It’s a great place for a city break, lots of other tourists. We looked up some places to go but I enjoyed just wondering into pubs/bars that looked interesting.

Definitely walk the walls. Railway museum for an hour? Shambles will be heaving. Minster? Just wander all the little snickleways. Down by the river for a walk and maybe a boat trip.

Have a wander around the Museum Gardens - includes the ruins of st Mary's abbey
Take a river trip down the Ouse
A walk around the city walls
Take a visit to the top of Cliffords Tower - fantastic views from the top, and it's recently been 'enhanced' (renovated doesn't seem the right word!) and it's fantastic inside.
In fact, just walk! Tons of little streets and alley ways to explore.

Yep, the tapas restaurant mentioned by @Twokittycats is Ambiente. There are two: one on Goodramgate which is more intimate, and one on Fossgate which is larger and more contemporary. Great food in both.

Loads of places to eat and drink - what sort of food do you like?

JoanThursday is spot on with things to visit. If your kids like pizza then try Dough Eyed Pizza, best pizza ever. Can’t beat Partisan for lunch/brunch on Micklegate either, beautiful food.

Thanks for the replies.

Just hubbie and I flying solo for this one, those restaurants both look fab - we quite like a steak! Neither of us are big drinkers and I'm a wuss so don't like scary things!

There is also a really nice Argentinian steak restaurant in the Fossgate area. (Think it might technically be on Walmgate but one runs on from the other!)

My highlights are York Minster, Jorvik Viking Centre (I was there with the kids mind, who loved the smells) and the Shambles. There was a shop there selling beautiful pieces of Whitby Jet jewellery if you're after a souvenir? The kids also loved the Railway museum. We did a touristy Ghost Tour at night too, which they loved.

I don't know if York still has a reputation for leery hen and stag parties, but be warned. They were a bit of an eye opener for the kids, but it was all good humoured enough.
