Itchy, I can't sleep, hotel changed room for us, but I believe the bed bugs on our clothes, I don't want to take it UK home, what can I do, throw all clothes and suitcases?

yes

I'm sorry you are going through this and what a nightmare but I would get rid of everything rather than risk brining it home.

Rocknrollstar · 09/04/2024 06:37

Ask hotel to launder them all as it’s their fault? And remember, they get on suitcases too

LynetteScavo · 09/04/2024 07:03

It's probably cheaper to bin all of your holiday clothes than try to get bedbugs out if your own home Sad

IIdentifyAsInnocent · 09/04/2024 07:07

I would 100% bin everything.

ashiningbeaconinspace · 09/04/2024 08:16

When you get home leave suitcases outside until you can treat contents for bedbugs. NHS website says this
wash affected bedding and clothing on a hot wash (60C) and tumble dry on a hot setting for at least 30 minutes
or
put affected clothing and bedding in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer for 3 or 4 days
You may need to throw away clothing that can't be hot washed or put in the freezer.

I've been there after taking100 primary school kids on a school skiing trip to a chalet where we found one of the rooms had bedbugs. You have my sympathy but it can be dealt with.

Seeline · 09/04/2024 08:19

I would buy bin bags and then double wrap everything before packing. Leave the suitcases outside and sort the contents in the garden to deal with as @ashiningbeaconinspace recommends.

BobnLen · 09/04/2024 08:23

Depends what it is, if it's cheap holiday stuff just chuck it, anything you might want to keep bring it home to the garden well wrapped to deal with.

One of our dc recently returned from a school trip covered in bed bug bites so I've done a LOT of googling in the past two weeks.

  • When you get home, leave your suitcase outside, go in, strip, put everything you're wearing in the machine and shower.
  • Go through and wash all your clothing on 60 degrees OR do a normal wash/washes and tumble dry clothing. Remember to run a cleaning hot cycle on your machine if your last wash was at 30.
  • If you need to bring your suitcase inside during the time you're washing, stand it inside a bath or shower cubicle.
  • Anything you can't wash on 60 - shoes for instance or delicate clothes - drown them. Bed bugs DO drown. Put the item in a bucket of water with a squit of soap to break the water surface tension, weigh it down so completely submerged and leave it for 3 days.
  • Luggage is more tricky - you can drown it as above, if it will completely fit in your tub. Or you can cover it in sealed bags and leave it in a garage for a year or so until they all starve.

The things you may want to keep will probably just fit in one suitcase so not so much to do at home with it

Chersfrozenface · 09/04/2024 08:33

Replacing anything you throw away will cost money.

What are a customer's rights to compensation for those costs? Especially a UK customer holidaying in another country.

I doubt TUI or hotel will compensate any penny.
My belongings are not cheap, I have spent time to buy new as well, this is a real nightmare, it also shake my confidence of travel or holiday.
What a distrusting hotel
