Quick ideas needed for short break

At short notice I've decided I'd like to take my two dc (10 and 8) away later this week. 2-3 Nights, north England or southern Scotland. (Not the lakes as we are from there). Husband is at work so somewhere stress free but entertaining for me to take them on my own. They are asking for Blackpool which I'm not completely against but would love some alternative ideas. Thank you 😊

The weather looks a bit crap later in the week for Blackpool.
Edinburgh?

We went to Edinburgh with dc similar aged. Loads to do and they really enjoyed it, particularly the castle and a museum where they got to drive a formula 1 car. Was a while ago now though so expect entrance fees etc have gone legging up massively.

That's the Museum of Scotland, and it's definitely still free entry.

York? Some fun museums / attractions if they're into that (National Railway Museum / Jorvik Viking Museum / York Dungeons / Possibly a child-friendly ghost walk / A chocolate tour / The Shambles is a good wander for Harry Potter fans...)

Callander and Blair Drummond safari park. They will light you a bbq and you just take your own food. Brilliant for kids and you can relax while they play on the massive playground.

If on a tight budget compare the accommodation at Travel Lodge etc on the outskirts St.Helens, Rainhill, widnes etc as rooms can be cheaper as its 20-30 mins drive to the centre.

Thanks for the ideas. Will have a look at these. I love Edinburgh but dc1 is going with school in the summer so will probably leave that for now. Will have a good look good some accommodation. Ideally want to park and then not drive again whilst there for ease.
