Glasgow tips

I'm doing a little Scotland tour in the summer and wondering whether to spend 1 or 2 nights in Glasgow.

Also looking for suggestions on what to do- I'll be on my own, so not really into pubs/nightlife. I like museums, walking- happy to walk around and marvel at architecture etc, the bits that are perhaps less obvious and popular.

1 night. You could do the sightseeing bus tour to give you an overview and then hang out at Kelvin grove Art Gallery then a quick University of Glasgow visit and then a trip to the Burrell Collection.

Definitely visit Glasgow on your trip. It is beautiful. The advice is to look up when you're walking around this fair city, and it's good advice. So much detail in the architecture all around the city. Take a stroll through Kelvingrove, appreciate the buildings around Charing Cross, have a look at the detail on the building down by the Broomielaw, maybe jump on a train and visit the Burrell Collection and Pollok Park 10 mins away from the city centre. Enjoy the modern architecture of some of the central business district or Buchanan St, take yourself for a nice lunch in one of the many restaurants or cafes, take in a show or some live music... it is honestly the best city. Have a great time on your trip.

and don't forget our museums are all free admission so go to as many as you wish.

The hop on and off bus tour would be ideal fir you! You learn loads about architecture and the history and its an easy way to travel round the city getting on and off at what interests you. Enjoy your trip!

You have to go to the Glasgow Necropolis. The most amazing and interesting cemetery with wonderful views. I could wander that place for hours.

ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey · 08/04/2024 23:24

The Burrell Collection is one of the loveliest museums. Would recommend the Tenement House too as a window into the way people used to live.

BringItOnxxx · 08/04/2024 23:45

My recommendations would be

  • Open top bus as public transport or subway
  • start with stroll round west end, visit botanic Gardens, lunch at six by nico or brunch at the Ubiquitous Chip
  • Glasgow University cloisters then visit nearby RennieMackintosh/Margaret McDonald's stunning reconstructed home on campus
  • Kelvingrove museum organ recital at 1pm?
  • Tenement house
  • Afternoon tea at SingleEnd
  • Head into town visit GOMA
  • Glasgow Cathedral, Provan's Lordship and Necropolis
  • Watch a film at GFT art House cinema
  • Finish with Gothic Glasgow walking tour

Another vote for the Kelvingrove.

lidolemon · 09/04/2024 09:11

I've decided on 2 nights! 😀

An open top bus tour sounds a great way to start and get my bearings.

Thank you @BringItOnxxx for all those links, I'm going to have a good look later and also look at the public transport.

Have a great time!

Have just thought of more, will add to the list.
George Square and tour of Glasgow City chambers(more marble than the Vatican!)
Princes Sq and Buchanan St for shopping
Panopticon music hall (weekend only)
Barras market (weekend only)

Belindabelle · 10/04/2024 20:39

Two nights is the right decision, enjoy.

@BringItOnxxx I am from the Glasgow area but now live further east. I think I need to go back home for a weekend as I haven’t done half the things on your list.

Mum5net · 11/04/2024 23:10

Honestly, one night is plenty.

I couldn't disagree more. Glasgow is a huge city with many attractions and some lovely historic areas. And great cafes etc. Writing it off as only worth a single night is just insane.

Go and see the highland cows at Pollok park - highlight of our trip!!

I live within an hour’s train ride. I have had three sets of house guests in the last month. All have visited Glasgow. My current house guest visited it yesterday, when it wasn’t raining, and said she would prefer not to go back into the city but see elsewhere today. Very recent lived experience.
