I would like to go to Ireland this year but have a very limited budget, would be looking for a ? cottage for 6 + a baby. Could anyone recommend anywhere please ? Also cheapest way to travel from Scotland ?

(NB Welcome are priced in £ and the Irish ones are priced in ? - makes a big difference at the moment!)

I can vouch that Rosturra's cottage is in a great location - I was visiting friends there last week! it's one of my favourite places in Ireland...

WendyWeber · 31/03/2008 14:59

Favourable exchange rate, KM? When's that going to be then?

TwoToTango · 31/03/2008 15:05

I feel like this is a really stupid question but do you need a passport to visit Ireland - i've got one but DS hasn't got one. Would I just be able to take his birth certificate for ID? Can you tell i'm not very well travelled

GrapefruitMoon · 31/03/2008 15:11

If you are flying I think you definitely need photo id. Think they might be a bit more lenient on the ferries -

We have used this company for 4 years in a row now and they are fairly reasonably priced and reliable - the cottages we've had have always exceeded our expectations.

SheherazadetheGoat · 31/03/2008 15:55

if traveling from scotland do the stranrar crossing to belfast. the road to dublin pretty good now.

you could stay in the north, enniskillen is lovely. or newcastle/mountains of mourne are.

btw i am irish and live in scotland, it is cheaper to go to france, irish cottages are v. expensive.

WendyWeber · 31/03/2008 20:04

£1 gets you just over 1.20 euros lately, KM - 1 euro costs nearly 80p - it's dire. (You should be coming over here for your hols)

DS1 is in France getting paid £70 a weeks - when he went, in December, 100 euros cost him just under a week's wage, about £67; now it's nearly £80

jmpuddleduck · 02/04/2008 09:16

I hadn't thought about passports, would we need them, does anyone know for sure ?

Try ownersdirect.co.uk we have rented a cottage in Ireland off there for the past 2 years. They have been fantastic and much cheaper than going through an agency.

roisin · 02/04/2008 16:01

Ireland is a route for child-traffickers apparently, so they can get quite strict at customs. We were advised to ensure we had passports for the boys. (Ds2's has expired - costs a fortune!)

jmpuddleduck · 05/04/2008 08:03

I was afraid you would say that roisin, dd1 has a passport because she is going to France with the school, but we would need to get 3 child and 1 adult passport before we start.

Hmm, that's why we have been put off going abroad, puddleduck - we would need six passports - would almost cost more than a bloody holiday

(go to Orkney instead and visit us on the way past )

Miaou · 07/04/2008 09:48

just worked it out -it would cost £328 for us to get passports!!!!
