Where to stay in Liverpool and stuff to do

I'm planning 2/3 nights in Liverpool in the summer hols for myself and 11yo DS.

Am looking to train it up there and stay central but am nervous of picking a dodgy hotel/ somewhere too noisy (in the nightlife zone).

Am looking at Premier Inn or Travelodge for my budget but open to serviced apartments or other hotels... just don't know where to start. Anyone got any advice?

Also what are the must do things?

Last time I was in Liverpool was a hen do 20 years ago!

Thank you

We stayed in a Days Inn near the river. There’s loads to do:
hop on n off bus gives you a tour and you can visit both cathedrals
Beatles tour
Walker Gallery
Maritime Museum
Ferry across the Mersey

It depends what you like doing but we always take the metro out to Port Sunlight as we like to look at the houses and the art gallery is wonderful

Just try to not include a Monday in your trip. All the museums are closed then as we found out in half-term after we'd ready got there

The Travelodges and Premier Inns in town are all decently located, but I’d avoid the Hanover St Premier Inn as that’s very close to the nightlife.

The Must do is the speed boat trip around the docks, its a nice sedate tour of the dock but if you are up for it they will take you to a section of dock with no speed limit it was fantastic, its not on the website at the moment but just call them.

Go up to the top of the Liver Building or Anglican Cathedral for great views.
Bombed out church.
Lark Lane/ Sefton Park.
Cavern club in the afternoon for an hour.

Premier inn at Albert dock is great

I recently stayed in the Pullman Liverpool. Lovely hotel with river views, and reasonably priced. Fairly central and walking distance to restaurants, the Beatles museum etc.

The Staycity apart hotel on the waterfront is great.

The open top bus is great as there are so many historical buildings which look amazing when you can see them higher up.

Stay at the Premier Inn at the Albert Dock, it’s quiet and a good base for seeing loads of sites. Albert Dock is lovely to walk around, lots of restaurants (Rudy’s is lovely), take a walk along to the waterfront (5 mins) to see the three graces including the Liver Building

Places to visit
Bus tour of the city (leaves from Albert Dock)

Museum of Liverpool (next to Albert Dock)

World Museum (next to St George’s Hall)

Gravity Max (Liverpool One across the road from Albert Dock) for gaming, go karting, crazy golf etc

Liverpool One + Church Street for shopping

Bold street and Castle street for cafes/restaurants

Perhaps see a show at the Empire/Everyman theatre

Visit a beach - Jump the train from Liverpool Central to Waterloo (20 mins) for Crosby beach (See the iron men and visit the bus yard for food/drinks) or to Freshfield (30 mins) for the National trust Formby beach and pinewoods (very beautiful beach). You could easily do both beaches in a day.

A little bit out of the city centre (probably £5 in a taxi) is the Baltic market. Great food choices, mini golf and Arcains which is pay once enjoy all arcade over 3 floors in an old brewery. Your DS will love it.
Food around the city has tons of choice. Bold street is good to wander up and down and choose one of the lovely restaurants.

Just a heads up, the museums are on strike at the moment so I’d check the website for reopening dates if your visit is imminent. I’ve heard they’re closed until mid-April, but don’t know how accurate that is.

I am certain you will like it
Food
Bold Street is full of food places and central, its the road from the pedestrianised area by M&S up to the Bombed out church.
Lark Lane is also a good place but about 15-20 mins by Taxi
Baltic market is also another different food place a short walk slightly out of the city centre

lots of good ideas here, but I have to suggest Western Approaches - went with DP and both wished we’d taken kids. Mind blowing place where they did the communication from in WW2

Thanks for all the great suggestions x
