Can anyone recommend a day out somewhere in any Yorkshire region that will entertain a:
63 yr old
42 yr old
24 yr old
36 yr old
11 yr old

Already done Xscape Castleford, Brimham Rocks, Yorkshire Wildlife Park, The Forbidden Corner, Doncaster Dome, Whitby, Scarborough beach.

Museums and stately homes probably not for us, as several people not particularly interested in history unless it's very engaging and fun.

Open to any other ideas though, as struggling to find something that's suitable for everyone.

We all enjoy walking and the outdoors, but two people have arthritis so can't be overly strenuous.

Thanks!

I know you've already done Yorkshire wildlife park, but there's been loads of new animals recently.

Including four new lions this week, Ukrainian rescues. (Mum and three cubs)

And a baby rhino!
worth a trip just to see him

AnneElliott · 23/03/2024 08:12

I came on to say Eden Camp but see it's already been recommended

My other favourites are Jorvik museum and the steam train. Plus Howarth village and the Brontë House.

igglu · 23/03/2024 08:35

We had a really nice time at the York birds of prey centre. I didn't think it was going to be my thing but I really enjoyed it and so did my teenagers and my parents.

Fountains Abbey world heritage site and you will find out why. Plus fab outdoor play area. Worth joining the National Trust for.

Come to York, loads to do.
Railway museum
River boat cruise
York Minster
Jorvik centre
Walk on the bar walls
Museum gardens, take a picnic.
Drive or get a train to Pickering then get on the North Yorkshire moors railway, you can also have a tour and a talk and a lineside walk.
You could get off at Goathland Station and walk around where "Heartbeat" was filmed

I agree. The water gardens are stunning.

I know you said no museums, but York Air Museum is fascinating and you can actually go inside some of the old planes. If you like gardens Burnby Hall in Pocklington (which isn't far from the air museum) is beautiful, and the carp in the lake are a sight to be seen. You can feed the fish and when you go to the lake edge it is like a scene from Piranha.

I would definitely recommend a trip to a cave, both White Scar and Ingleborough were worth a visit.

Bolton abbey.

I agree the suggestions of Jorvik (great fun - there’s a ride through an anamatronic Viking village). Adults get to sit down and relax, kids find it fascinating. Also the Castle Museum with the recreated Victorian town - it’s like a film set. I was very impressed - much more fun for kids than many museums. Mine loved it. Also these are both good if weather not reliable.

Royal Armouries in Leeds

I dm a big fan of YSP, but I can walk there, there's a few cafes and you can hire motability scooters, it can be as wandery or hikey as you like, but it is on a hill.

Clifford's Tower next to the York Castle Museum had great views over York from the new(ish) roof. It's quite pricey to get in, but worth the time if you have Eng Heritage membership.

There is a sourdough bakery on Tower St, across from Clifford's Tower called "Cosgrove and Son" if you need a coffee and croissant/bun/slice of pizza. Not only is their food all handmade on site, but they have a lovely story. The bakery was started by a dad, so he could teach skills and hand on the business to his son who has Down's syndrome.

A day out in the small city of Ripon.

All walkable, plenty of independent shops and cafes. Great parks ( one with a very sweet and traditional cafe overlooking the mini golf and bowling green), cathedral, museums and a range of events. Market day is Thursday. Easter egg hunt during this school holiday. Small canal boat ride, Ripon Races etc etc.

You mentioned not being into history unless very engaging. On that note, we LOVED the underground tour at the National Mining Museum. I know it sounds dry, but we had an incredibly charismatic ex-miner leading our group, and he really brought everything to life. It's not physically demanding.

Or a canal boat trip from Skipton? I think you can take a boat out yourself for the day, but we went on one of the tours.

AnnaMagnani · 23/03/2024 11:16

York Railway Museum is great even if you are sceptical of museums and not actually interested in trains. Surprise hit of our holiday.

Leeds Armouries similar experience, and if nothing else firing arrows is a lot of fun.

RampantIvy · 23/03/2024 11:18

I agree about the National Mining Museum.

As an aside I took my (London born and bred) sister and BIL there many years ago. The ex miner doing the tour had a very broad local accent and I had to repeat everything he said for them because they found him difficult to understand (I have been living in Yorkshire for 44 years).

The Deep, Hull. North Yorkshire Moors steam train, Pickering to Whitby.

Yes, catch a steam train on the North York Moors Railway from Pickering to Goathland & back. Pickering is a lovely town with a ruined castle & you can get out for a stroll at any of the NYM railway stations. Plus any Harry Potter fans will recognise one of the stations. I can't remember if it's Grosmont or Goathland that's the station for Hogwarts in the films.
