I’m based in Ireland and looking for somewhere for a few days exploring, with 2 children. I like the idea of north wales but it’s a long time since I’ve been there.
Id love a recommendation for places / towns to stay, maybe somewhere near Snowdonia and also somewhere coastal - is Colwyn Bay nice?

We got a cottage on the outskirts of Abergele last summer. Lovely quiet village and a good base for travelling.

Just thought last year we stayed at the Waterloo hotel in Betws-y-coed which isn’t posh but is family friendly and has a pool and is walking distance to the village and stuff to do. It’s gorgeous round there. Not far to Snowdon, zipworld etc

I'd go more for Cricieth, Harlech or Menai Bridge. Conwy is nice, Llandudno is a bit old fashioned, lots of retirees and coach trips. You'll feel more of a cultural difference in the West if that's what you're after.

Hi there, when you say West, do you mean towards Anglesey? I think it will all be different to Ireland, but I would like to spend time in a typical Welsh town or village…if Welsh is spoken there even better.
Kind of thinking of Llandudno now as I think it will have lots for the kids to do, but I’m a bit worried it might be like Blackpool and I didn’t like there when visiting, admittedly many years ago.

Pools, Empire hotel risboro hotel, imperial hotel.
From memory

Booking.com do offers as do the hotels. The best thing to do is sign up for emails. I'm always getting offers.

Thanks, the Imperial in Llandudno looks nice. On my shortlist!

Llandudno is NOT like Blackpool! Far from it! Much nicer!

Llandudno isn't quite Blackpool, it's relatively genteel, but you are surrounded by holidaymakers and retirees. It's not a place I'd go for personally- I'm more into mountains, historical sites, that sort of thing.

It's great that you want to hear some Welsh! Caernarfon is a must, because Welsh is spoken there naturally and you'll hear it in shops and on the streets. There's a really nice hostel that's run through the medium of Welsh in the centre of town (I'm not a hostel girl but I've been there and it was great.) It's called Llety Arall.

I'd go from there to Llŷn, which has lots of little villages and gorgeous walks (Welsh language centre at Nant Gwrtheyrn is breathtaking!) Then I'd go to Betws y Coed, Beddgelert, and climb one of the mountains that isn't yr Wyddfa (Snowdon)- It gets stupidly busy and Cnicht or Cader Idris are far more interesting for views imo.

Have a lovely time. It's a beautiful place, we're very lucky to have it!

Porthmadog.. then you can drive to Barmouth and Harlech and Anglesey for the castle.
Black rock sands at Porthmadog is stunning and you can drive onto the huge flat beach.

This has won a David Bellamy award.

The Caravan park l put a link to is a 2 min walk to Black rock sands..
There is also the Ffestiniog railway.. lovely harbour at Porthmadog.
The waterfalls.. look at the site it tells you of the near by attractions and things to do and see.

Colwyn Bay has a nice beach but not much else, Rhos on Sea is a small village type place with shops etc and a nice beach.
I would base your self around Conwy/ Llandudno as its just outside the Snowdonia national park or Porthmadog area as you can then go to Harlech and explore the Llyn Peninsular
