Advice on places to stay - NE England

Hello
Was looking for some advice on places to stay, was thinking Northumberland or maybe Lakes - been to Lakes lots before and very hilly - we are taking our baby who will be just over a year old.

We enjoy walking and being outdoors so places that are flat but also suitable to take a baby. Also enjoy historic places.

Thank you.

  • Maybe Hadrians Wall or other places in Northumberland suggestions?
  • We live near Middlesbrough so not too long or a drive due to baby.

Lots of nice coastline, Bamburgh castle, Holy island, cragside NT historic house.

Hexham?

We had a lovely stay at Kielder Waterside. Lots of flat forest trails to explore.

Alnwick, Bamburgh and Seahouses would all are a decent base.

I'm sure you're aware the lakes aren't in the NE! It's an equally valid choice tho. Probably a similar distance, depending on exactly where you go. The drive over the A66 is stunning.

We went to Lindisfarne for my birthday and stayed in Coldstream and loved it! Just abit far/unpredictable times for with little one :(

Wirksworth is nice and has a ruined castle, interesting shops and a good pub

Yes Lakes isn't too long of a drive from us, I'm aware it's the other side of England but lovely drive :)
My nana loves Keswick so we were always there as kids, stayed at Penrith with my mam while I was pregnant and had a lovely explore of Lacys Cave :D
Wouldn't mind going again but would rather try somewhere new and slightly closer to home since we have baby now :?

I was going to suggest bambrugh but you could
Go south a bit and stay in the north york moors or over to the dales. You’re not far from leyburn.
Teesdale and high force area is also lovely.
Depends what you like but I stayed near beamish and spent 3 days at beamish when my eldest was Under 2. It’s was great. Lots of things to interest a small child and lots of baby changing facilities etc.

I would recommend Alnwick - Alnwick Gardens and the Castle are both interesting and baby/toddler friendly. The town is very easy to get around on foot and is close to Alnmouth for a beach trip.

The areas close to Hadrian's Wall we've visited have tended to be quite hilly. Hexham is nice though and you can get to various sites on Hadrian's Wall from there.

Also, probably quite close to you, but Durham City has lots of historic sites and is very easy to explore with little ones.

I stayed in an airBnB in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, which is not somewhere you ever see mentioned as a holiday spot (ex mining town). Probably for this reason it was cheap, and a lovely little house.

It was also a really good centre to stay - we went to Lindisfarne, Alnwick/Alnmouth, Hadrian's Wall, and walking along the coast around Bamburgh. Newbiggin itself had a few pubs and take away places, but best of all a long safe beach.

So it might be worth looking a little away from the usual tourist spots for something at a good price. I would happily go there again; we didn't run out of things to do!

Some great suggestions for Northumberland.
Also look at the Berwick area, as you can hop over the border and explore some of SE Scotland ❤️

Lovely suggestions :D
We visited Bemish lots as kids but feel it would be better to visit with baby when he's abit older, also love Eden Camp but feel the same :(
We visit North York Moors a lot and Whitby area/Beck Hole waterfalls so just wanted a new adventure :)
Going to have a look at Leyburn tho, I think we drove through when we visited Jervaulx Abbey so appreciate suggestion :D wouldn't have thought of there x
