Don't mind slightly pricey but not prefer classic to original. Any tips?

Covent Garden Hotel in seven dials

Either Delaunay at the Aldwych, or a short walk to The Wolseley near Piccadilly.

Second The Wolseley recommendation, it's a lovely room as well as a cracking tea

Please think twice about The Wolsely. I was there for Afternoon Tea to celebrate a friends milestone birthday from the US. The service was extremely slow, and the food + one glass of champagne each was not worthy of the £130 bill ( inc. service) at the end. The scones and the cakes were small and at no stage were we offered any more. The only thing they were happy to refill was the tea.
I used to love this place but had not gone since Covid and since the Group has been sold to an overseas company. Sorry guys I recommend you find another joint!

Great food and service at The Thames Foyer in the Savoy

The Connaught Hotel, or a few minutes extra check out Rosewood.

I too was a little underwhelmed by The Wolsley.
It was very buzzy for a Monday night. It had friendly, helpful staff.
But my meal (evening) could have been a bit hotter. The others in the party felt theirs could be hotter too.
Would I return ?
It wouldn't be top of my list.
But it gets mentioned so often on Mumsnet as a "go to eatery" I was glad I experienced it.

I love the buzziness of The Wolseley! Someone has already recommended the Covent Garden Hotel, which is very nice. It's a bit cheaper at menu level than some of the more famous hotels, although if you're anything like me you'll end up ordering more champagne and spending a fortune, then they turn the lights down a bit and you end up staying on into the evening in the bar...

I was going to suggest the Delauney too. I had lunch there recently and it was delicious. Attentive staff (but not overly so). No idea if they do afternoon tea though, sorry.

The Strand Palace Hotel, lovely. Visit the website for the menu.

Ham Yard hotel was fantastic for afternoon tea and not too expensive. Very relaxing, beautiful decor and so spacious, felt quite intimate
