York with young children

Looking for recommendations for York with young children (4 and almost 2).

Taking advantage of Transpennine's £1 tickets and going in half term for less than 48 hours.

So far we have the train museum and The Potions Cauldron on the list. Anyone got any good things for us to do?

TIA

I only really know York from an adult and teen perspective, but Little Vikings has lots of ideas and info.

But YYY to the National Railway Museum!
The Plush Cafe is fun, and kids under 140
cm eat half price at Panda Mami - it's an all you can eat world food buffet place, so ideal for picky eaters who might only want to eat pizza whilst their sibling wants Chinese food and their mum wants curry.

If your half term is w/c 12 Feb, then the Viking Festival will be on, with stalls and activities on Parliament St.

Boat trip on the river, museum gardens, Jorvik centre. Although I think the railway Museum will be the best bit.

York chocolate story! When I went a few years ago they get to make/decorate their own chocolate

Haveyoubrushedyourteeth · 03/02/2024 20:53

York Chocolate Story went down well with mine at similar ages, also the Yorvik museum. The later has a walk through bit ,then you get into fairground style cars and go through a village with authentic sights and smells etc. Immediately opposite is the Hole in Wand crazy golf place, that might be a bit much for your little one though, but the last time we went there were all ages. Castle museum is good too from memory. Are you on Facebook OP?

Depends on what they are in to but

Railway museum
Harry potter shop in the shambles is cute
Jorvik is good but pricey
If you have a national trust membership Clifford's Tower is good
Castle Museum
York Chocokate Story is really good
River cruise although may not be the best weather if fab half term

If they like art then the van gogh immersive experience is great but they might be a bit young

Second the chocolate story which is great. Also when I was younger I loved the Minstwr but depends what your children are interested in. The national railway museum is also good and Museum Gardens are good for a wander

locket2009 · 03/02/2024 21:05

Also my children loved York dungeons and think Kellogg's do half price vouchers on the packets

whoami24601 · 03/02/2024 21:09

Just a heads up - a lot of the Railway Museum is closed for refurbishment so double check before you go. I haven't done the chocolate story but Jorvik is good.

angsanana · 03/02/2024 21:16

Dig museum! I think you can get joint tickets with Jorvik

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/02/2024 21:17

Clifford's Tower is English Heritage rather than NT. it's up a lot of steep steps. I guess that depends on how good your 2 year old is at walking. There are great views of York but I'm not sure I'd pay to go in with dc. The interest is limited for 2 and 4 I'd say.

The York Chocolate Story has a lot of talking before you get to the chocolate making! I'm not convinced that it'll hold the interest of a 2 year old, although there are lots of sweetie freebies!

Dig museum and definitely Railway Museum

needlesandhaystacks · 03/02/2024 21:27

Thanks for all of these suggestions. Lots of good ideas! HT is w/b 12th so great news for the Viking Festival.
Thank you all!

Walk around the town walls

PointeShoesandTutus · 03/02/2024 21:34

The castle museum is great for younger ones - they have a whole toy room with a dolls house, puppet theatre etc.

The railway museum is great too.

I'd be cautious about the likes of the dungeons and Jorvik - took mine at 4 to Jorvik and she was terrified!

Haveyoubrushedyourteeth · 03/02/2024 21:40

The Facebook page, if you're on there OP, is called visit York. It'll have everything that'll be going on during half term listed. Have a great time.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/02/2024 22:17

The York Dungeon doesn't let in children under 5.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 04/02/2024 02:48

Castle museum
There was a dinasour bone dig thing

Scootagal · 08/02/2024 18:08

Yeh cross the Dungeon off your list - at a min age 10 but even then I wouldn't take my 10 year old.

Catherhino · 08/02/2024 18:18

Loads! The castle museum is great - some of it would be a bit boring but the shops/street are quite interactive and I think they tend to have things on for kids at half term. There's the Jorvik Viking museum (not sure if yours might be a bit too young but I'm sure the website would say. And indoor mini-golf at the "hole in wand" (HP themed) is great! A walk along the walls/river boat trip off the weather is nice? Clifford's Tower (Motte & Bailey castle). I love York and am very lucky that my daughter lives there!

Favouritefruits · 18/02/2024 18:54

Definitely do the Dig museum and Jorvik!

Clearinguptheclutter · 18/02/2024 18:56

Train museum is def great. I’d also consider the Jorkvik Viking museum.
